Game Description:
Witchaven is a fantasy computer game, developed by Capstone Software and released by Intracorp Entertainment in 1995. It was followed by the sequel, Witchaven II: Blood Vengeance in 1996.
Witchaven II: Blood Vengeance is the sequel to the fantasy first-person shooter video game Witchaven, released in 1996 by Capstone Software.
Just as its predecessor, Witchaven II used Build engine of Duke Nukem 3D fame. It was Capstone's last proprietary game release before they and their parent company, Intracorp, went bankrupt.
Although the games are FPS (slasher, not shooter), the games had some fantasy computer role-playing game elements to it, including character progression (gaining experience points and consequently advancing in levels, increasing the number of hit points and weapons proficiency and giving the player access to more powerful spells) and a focus on close-quarters combat instead of the standard FPS run-and-gun gameplay. This is however still a typical old-school FPS in which the player simply kills everything that moves in his path while searching for an exit that would lead to the next level (in this case a pentagram key-activated teleport-based system of advancing through the game).
Personal Notes:
Adding this here because it was request by: GhettoBlaster aka NanoShark
Plot / Story:
Witchaven I: The story is of sword and sorcery type in which the player takes on the role of Grondoval, a knight in service of his homeland Stazhia. He has been just chosen by his master, Lord Verkapheron, to travel to the forbidding Island of Char, now known as Witchaven, domain of the powerful wicked witch known as Illwhyrin, responsible for plunging Stahzia into never-ending darkness. In her lair hidden in a massive subterranean maze, Illwhyrin is casting evil spells, consorting with demons, keeping monsters as pets, and, as more than a few unlucky Stazhians learned, performing human sacrifice. For years adventurers from across the Prime Realms have journeyed into those dark depths seeking glory and wealth, but a few have returned; those who did come back, though, told tales of a horrifying evil. Now the rumour has reached Stazhia that the witch seeks to lift a dimensional barrier known as the Veil, which separates the game's universe from chaotic Nether Reaches, and each day brings her closer to creating a permanent portal through the Veil to allow the demon lord to traverse into the Prime Realms and rule the world. Grondoval arrives at Char by boat, armed only with a dagger but determined to save his people and rid the world of the witch queen' terror. His mission is to fight his way through the labirynth of dark caves and dungeons, trying to reach Illwhyrin's inner sanctum and stop her before she can succeed in her plan.
Witchaven II: Witchaven II takes place after the events of the first game, when the forces of darkness were triumphed over: the witches of Char were destroyed in their lair and the evil curse was lifted. During the victory party celebrating the destruction of Witchaven, the hero of the game, Grondoval, falls into a slumber. After awaking, he is told by the mysterious female golden dragon named Ikethsti that the vindictive great witch Cirae-Argoth, one of the most powerful of Nether-Reaches Order of Witches, has arrived to avenge the death of her sister, the witch queen Illwhyrin. Her army of demons and Argothonian clansmen has abducted Grondoval's beloved princess Elizabeth and the other people of his homeland Stazhia to exact the titular blood vengeance and now it is only up to Grondoval to try and rescue his countrymen before they will all be gone forever. His new quest is fight his way to find and defeat Cirae-Argoth, thwarting her plot, and to capture the Horned Skull item which would then contain her evil powers until it could be destroyed. The story is told in the intro sequence and further explained in the game's manual.
