Arx Libertatis is a cross-platform, open source port of Arx Fatalis, a 2002 first-person role-playing game developed by Arkane Studios.
Arx Fatalis features crafting, melee and ranged combat, as well as a unique casting system where the player draws runes in real time to effect the desired spell.
The Arx Libertatis source code is based on the publicly released Arx Fatalis sources and available under the GPL 3+ license. This does however not include the game data, so you need to obtain a copy of the original Arx Fatalis or it's demo to play Arx Libertatis.
Personal Notes:
While Arx Libertatis is cross-platform and could run on Mac OS X there is no official Mac port and I couldn’t get the source to compile, so for the time being this wrapped Windows version is the best way to play Arx Fatalis. I will most likely not keep up with the releases of the team, so if you want the latest version you will need to update Arx Libertatis yourself.
tested Game-Version: 1.0.1 release with game files from GoG.com
Genre: First-Person Dungeon Crawler RPG
My System Specs
- OS: Mac OS X 10.7 Lion
- CPU: 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
- RAM: 4 GB
- Video: NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB
- Port Disc Space: 840 MB
Known Issues:
- some graphics options have minor glitches, see below for more information
- Some audio options don’t play certain sounds like the voice when casting or footsteps
Installation:
This one is a bit different, since the main software is free and already installed but you still need the game files.
- right-click Arx Libertatis.app -> Show Package Contents -> drive_c -> Program Files -> Arx Libertatis
- get all the files ending with .pak from your Arx Fatalis installation or CD and put them into the above folder
More information on getting game files can be found on the Arx Libertatis Wiki.
Which settings to use?
Arx Libertatis supports both DirectX and OpenGL/OpenAL. I got glitch-free results using OpenGL for video rendering, Auto-Select for the audio backend and no EAX. I also got the best performance when running at full resolution (1920x1200).

Just to make sure we are on the same line: I am only providing Arx Libertatis, the source port of Arx Fatalis, the game. Arx Fatalis is still a commercial game, you need to buy it. Once you have it, you need the file data.pak from Arx Fatalis and put it into Arx Libertatis. Also, very important, you need to patch Arx Fatalis with the latest patch to work with Arx Libertatis.
To sum up, Arx Libertatis (which I am providing) is need to run the game, but Arx Fatalis is what makes the game. If you don't have Arx Fatalis you can buy it cheaply and DRM-free from GoG.com

Next question is obviously how to get to a patched data.pak file? You need to install the game somehow and apply the patch, for example in on a Windows machiene or in a Windows Virtual machiene. The easiest and fasted way however would be to get Wineskin Winery, download any recent Wineskin engine (we just need the files it doesn't matter if the game runs), make a new wrapper and install Arx Fatalis into it. Install the patch as well, then go inside the wrapper's contents and find the data.pak file.
