Quite like its predecessors, the core gameplay of GTA IV consists of giving the player a large, open world environment in which to move around freely. On foot, the player character can walk, run, jump, climb over obstacles and swim, as well as use weapons and perform basic hand-to-hand combat. Players can steal and drive a variety of vehicles, including automobiles, boats, helicopters, and motorcycles. Grand Theft Auto IV takes advantage of Natural Motion's Euphoriaengine, which combines artificial intelligence, bio-mechanics and physics to make open, non-linear environments that allow players to explore and choose how they wish to play the game. Although completing most of the storyline missions are necessary to progress through the game and unlock certain content and parts of the city, they are not required, as players can complete them at their own leisure. When not attempting a storyline mission, players can free-roam, giving them the ability to do activities. Side missions such as locating and destroying criminals in the police car database or participating in street races can keep the player occupied for hours.

Personal Notes:
- FOR MOST USERS THIS WILL PROBABLY LAG! I recommend you try and find/use a commandline.txt file for GTA IV, making the game run smoother.
- Should work on most graphics cards, confirmed working on a NVIDIA GTX 670, still lags a bit though on reasonably high settings.

- Created this wrapper as a Mountain Lion GTAIV alternative wrapper! It also supports 1.0.7.0 so you can play this game even if you have it installed through steam!

For the game to run, you MUST place the files in this archive into your Grand Theft Auto 4 folder! Without it, saving wont work and the game probably wont launch.

My System Specs:
- OS: OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.2
- CPU: Intel Core i7 2600k @ 4.2GHz
- RAM: 16GB 1600MHz
- Video: 2GB MSI GTX 670 OC Edition
- Disk Space:   8GB

Known Issues:

IMPORTANT: When you first launch the game, there is a chance the menu will be VERY laggy. To fix this, just go into settings, graphics and change the resolution to a 60Hz resoluton (as it will probably be preset to 1Hz, making it display 1 frame per second). I currently use 1920 x 1080 (60Hz) resolution!

- This wrapper may not perform well on your mac! If you decide to use the wrapper, please understand that you will most likely have to use low or very low settings!

- You WILL get a Black Screen after the introduction video! Just wait 30 seconds and the menu will load up!

- If you have VSYNC Disabled and try to load a game, the game will continue loading and will probably never exit the loading screen! keep it enabled until you have loaded a game, then you can disable it!

- KEYBOARD will NOT work in 'Automatic' screen settings, a virtual desktop OR forced fullscreen mode MUST be used for keyboard and mouse to work!

Installation:
  • -Right click the wrapper, show package contents and open wineskin.app.

  • Click on advanced, tools, winetricks, click the 'apps' tab and select 'Steam'. THEN click run!

  • Let steam install.

  • Once its installed, go into wineskin.app within the wrapper, next to the steam launcher, and click on advanced.

  • Change the 'Windows EXE' line to: /Program Files/Steam/steam.exe and then exit wineskin.app.

  • Last (most important) step is go go into the contents of your wrapper again, go to: drive_c ----> Program Files ----> Rockstar Games ----> Grand Theft Auto IV and drag/paste in THE XLIVELESS FILES

  • Finally, run the wrapper, steam will launch, sign in to your steam account and download GTA IV. Once its downloaded, click play!
Now, whenever you launch the wrapper, it will sign into steam and allow you to launch your game via your 'Steam Game Library'.

For 'non steam users':
Please note that I do not (in any way) promote piracy and that I highly recommend you PURCHASE the games that you want to play!
  • Right click the wrapper, show package contents and launch wineskin.app, then select install new software.

  • Locate the setup.exe file (that is within the .iso you probably downloaded, if you download an ISO, double click it to mount it!) and install the PC files by going through the setup.

  • -- Don't bother installing directx and vcrun if it asks you too. --

  • Then, go back into the contents of the wrapper, go to: drive_c ----> Program Files ----> Rockstar Games ----> Grand Theft Auto IV (make sure your Rockstar Games and Grand Theft Auto IV folders are named EXACTLY this) then  go into the Grand Theft Auto IV folder and paste/drag over the 'no-cd crack' AND THE XLIVELESS FILES that you most likely will be using.

The last step is to launch the wrapper!

Um...  Wouldn't the cider version be a better wrapper to use...?

I already mention in the post above that this is my alternative to the cider wrapper which, for me, does not run on Mountain Lion. It also supports version 1.0.7.0, meaning you can run this game straight from your steam library if you wanted too.
Also, if i remember correctly, the cider wrapper had pretty poor performance on most, if not all macs... seeing as even the PC port of GTA IV is not very well optimised.

So, in all honesty, I prefer this wrapper to the cider wrapper. Its fully playable for me, since i have a powerful graphics card... though I admit, the graphics settings I'm using are lower than what I would use on PC.
Is playable on ATI ?

I'd assume so. You'll need to try it to find out.
Alright.

I have the same specs as you do, but for some reason, I am getting an error like this:

SECULauncher: failed to start application. [2000]

I don't exactly know what this is, as I've never had this problem with a port before. Any suggestions/advice?
Some notes on getting this to work with an ATI Radeon HD 5870:

Placed the xlive.dll from the .rar in the description in the GTAIV folder. It then tried to start with a resolution my monitor or X11 apparently doesn't like: "err:x11settings:X11DRV_ChangeDisplaySettingsEx No matching mode found 1680x1028x32 @0! (XRandR)"

I was able to get around this by opening WineSkin.app in the wrapper, going into Screen Options, and either setting a rootless virtual desktop, or fullscreen. The important part seems to be that I explicitly set a resolution instead of let Wine choose my own.

I'll report back on performance after playing with the settings a bit and seeing how it does.
Performance is alright. Just start at low settings and work up until you're satisfied with speed/quality.

Though sometimes the human models have lovecraftian hands that look weird as hell. Not sure if that's just my game that's messing up or what. Some geometry thing.
When i open using official securerom and non-updated files installed straight from disc i can get past the CD requirement but can't find anything to help with the requirement of running RGSC.
When i update to 1.0.7 i can't find a no-cd crack that can work but i'm assuming that i will be able to get past the RGSC requirements using the xliveless linked here.
Feels like i am caught in a catch 22...
Can anyone help me out?

the 1.0.7 update removed RGSC, i think. You should try just updating straight to 1.0.7.0 and applying a no-cd crack, such as the razor1911 crack, and then add the xliveless files. Because xliveless is needed for the game to run at all in wine, multiplayer will not be possible.
hey Dan how did you fix the blue rendering problem? might be useful to know for future ports

I haven't encountered any blue rendering issues throughout the (small) gameplay i've had, so I guess it has been 'fixed'? You should give it a shot yourself, if you have the PC files at hand.

I didn't encounter any blue rendering problems to begin with, perhaps its the engine im using... the dlloverrides im using, or maybe the Direct3D settings im using. You should have a look in the user.reg

Heres a screenshot I took a while ago: http://cl.ly/image/412e0I3M1w3F

That worked. Thanks a lot Dan....
Until in game i was adjusting the graphical settings then when I reloaded the game I can't get past the menu. The only interaction i get is that if i hover my mouse over things they go white. I can't select things by clicking nor using the arrow or enter keys.
Do you know how to fix this?

try deleting your graphic save files by going to

drive_c > users > wineskin > local settings > Application Data > Rockstar Games > GTAIV and try and remove the settings folder and run the game again.

Also, if this does work, try not disabling VSYNC or Definition.

Cheers!

EDIT: After you done that, try going into wineskin.app, set screen options and set screen settings to fullscreen.
It bounced on my dock, and didnt open. Any advice or troubleshooting Dan?
