About the game
Fallout 3 on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.../wiki/Fallout_3
Fallout 3 on Wikia: http://fallout.wikia.../wiki/Fallout_3

Personal Notes:
This wrapper does not include the game itself. You need to have your own standalone copy of the game that needs to be installed or copied into the wrapper.

If you want to play Steam versions of Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas then please check this port instead: http://portingteam.c...lout-new-vegas/

This Port includes the modified d3d9.dll file to run Fallout 3 on on Intel HD and Iris graphic boards (https://support.appl.../en-gu/HT204349).

My System Specs:
  • OS: OS X 10.11.3, macOS 10.12.5
  • CPU: Dual-Core i5 2.4GHz, Quad-Core i7 2.9GHz
  • RAM: 8 GB, 16 GB
  • Video: Intel Iris, Intel HD 530, AMD Radeon Pro 460
  • Disk Space: 9.8/9.57 GB (446/368 MB for wrapper)
Known Issues:
  • The game sometimes crashes during game play. For frequent crashes (see also https://www.youtube....h?v=ZX0Tr0w1jbY):
    • Modify the bUseThreadedAI=1 and iNumHWThreads=2 entries in the Fallout.INI file.
    • Try lower video quality settings.
Installation (Fallout 3 GOTY installation from GoG.com):
  • Purchase Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition at https://www.gog.com/...he_year_edition
  • Download the game files from your GoG.com account. Keep the downloaded files together in one folder.
  • Download the «Fallout 3 (GoG) on Wine for macOS» wrapper from the download link on this page.
  • Unzip the downloaded Fallout-3-GOTY_GoG_(Wine).zip file.
  • Hold the ctrl key and make a mouse click on the unzipped Fallout 3 GOTY wrapper. Select Show Package Contents in the contextual menu.
  • Within the wrapper there are two folders (Contents and drive_c) and one application file (Wineskin). Hold the ctrl key and make a mouse click on the Wineskin icon. Choose Open from the contextual menu (see also https://support.apple.com/kb/PH21769 for more information about opening an app from an unidentified developer).
  • Click the Install Software button.
  • Click Choose Setup Executable.
  • Select the downloaded setup_fallout_3_1.7.0.3_(12034).exe file and click Choose.
  • Accept the EULA and click Install to start the GoG installation process.
  • The installation process will fail towards the end of the installation. However, all required files were copied into the wrapper. Quit or Force Quit (https://support.appl.../en-us/HT201276) the installer and Wineskin. You can review the installed files within the wrapper in the drive_c/GOG Games/Fallout 3/ folder.
  • Restart Wineskin and click the Adcanced button. Make sure that /GOG Games/Fallout 3/FalloutLauncher.exe is selected in the Windows EXE field under the Configuration tab.
  • Click Test Run to launch the game out of Winskin. Alternatively close Wineskin and launch the game by double-clicking the Fallout 3 GOTY wrapper.
If your Mac is equipped with NVIDIA or ATI/AMD graphic boards then you are done and you can enjoy playing. For Macs with Intel graphic boards (HD series, Iris, Iris Pro) please follow the instructions below the «Fallout 3 copy» instructions.

Installation (Fallout 3 copy):
  • Download the «Fallout 3 on Wine for macOS» wrapper from the download link on this page.
  • Unzip the downloaded Fallout 3 (Wine).zip file.
  • Hold the ctrl key and make a mouse click on the unzipped Fallout 3 wrapper.
  • Use one of the options to install, copy or move your standalone copy of the game into the wrapper:
    • The command Choose Setup Executable requires the game CD to install from. It is not verified that the game CD is supported for installation or game play. It is recommended to use a copy of the game that runs without the CD.
    • The commands Copy a Folder Inside and Move a Folder Inside require a complete copy of the game within an original Fallout 3 game folder. The two commands copy or move the game folder inside the Program Files folder within the wrapper. Please consider that the Fallout 3 folder needs to be placed in the Bethesda Softworks folder, not directly in the Program Files folder. You have three options to achieve this:
      • Delete the existing empty Fallout 3 folder within the wrapper. Then move a complete Fallout 3 game folder manually into the existing Bethesda Softworks folder within the wrapper.
      • Delete the existing the Bethesda Softworks folder within the wrapper. Then run the copy or move commands and select an existing Bethesda Softworks folder that contains the complete Fallout 3 game folder.
      • Copy or move all the required files by hand to the correct locations without using the copy or move commands.
  • Make sure that /Program Files/Bethesda Softworks/Fallout 3/FalloutLauncher.exe is selected in the Windows EXE field under the Configuration tab.
  • Click Test Run to launch the game out of Winskin. Alternatively close Wineskin and launch the game by double-clicking the Fallout 3 wrapper.
If your Mac is equipped with NVIDIA or ATI/AMD graphic boards then you are done and you can enjoy playing. For Macs with Intel graphic boards (HD series, Iris, Iris Pro) please follow the instructions below.

Fallout 3 on Macs with Intel graphic boards (see Known Issues):
If you have a Mac with an Intel video graphic board then you need to add a modified d3d9.dll file to the game folder and activate it through the Wine configuration.
  • Hold the ctrl key and make a mouse click on the Fallout 3 wrapper icon. Select Show Package Contents in the contextual menu.
  • You find the modified d3d9.dll file in the d3d9.dll for Intel GPU folder directly in the wrapper of the GoG.com version or in /drive_c/Program Files/Bethesda Softworks/d3d9.dll for Intel GPU/ in the generic Fallout 3 wrapper.
  • Move or copy the d3d9.dll file to the drive_c/GOG Games/Fallout 3/ folder for the GoG.com version or in the /Program Files/Bethesda Softworks/Fallout 3/ folder for the generic version.
  • Open the Wineskin application within this wrapper.
  • Click in Tools tab.
  • Click Config Utility (winecfg).
  • Click the Libraries tab in the new window.
  • Enter d3d9 In the text field where it says New override for library and click the Add button.
  • Click the OK button, then wait a few seconds and close the Wineskin app.
View these instructions as video guide on YouTube (this video guide is for the Steam version of Fallout 3 but the d3d9 trick is similiar for the standalone version, only the game folder location is different): https://www.youtube....h?v=YYtX_NCDMe0

You can now open the Fallout 3 app and play the game on Macs with Intel graphic boards. You will notice in the video options of Fallout 3 that the Graphics Adapter shows as NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS (see screenshot).

Updating Wine
Wine gets continuously updated. In most cases performance and stability improve with new releases. You need the Wineskin Winery app to download the latest Wine engines for macOS.
  • Download Wineskin Winery here: http://wineskin.urge...?page=Downloads
  • Unzip the downloaded file and place the Wineskin Winery app to a location of your choice.
  • Open the Wineskin Winery app.
  • Click the + button where it says New engine(s) available!
  • Select the newest engine.
  • Click Download and Install, then click OK.
  • Quit the Wineskin Winery app.
  • Open the Wineskin app from within the game wrapper.
  • Click Advanced.
  • Click the Tools tab.
  • Click Change Engine Used on the lower right under Wrapper Tools.
  • Select the latest engine you installed before in the Wineskin Winery app.
  • Click OK.
  • A test run will be performed automatically. Just go through it or quit/abort it.
  • Quit the Wineskin app.
I am using WS9Wine2.6 on this wrapper. Feel free to leave a comment to share your experience with new versions.

i use the tryed the no-cd patches of gamecopy world.
On my macbook pro retina 15" all runs fine.
But on my sisters macbook pro retina 13" it crashes. even with the d3d9.dll. :(
Crashing when i wanna start a new game :/. Thought i got a long w8ted b-day present.
@scops: This is strange, I am using too a MBP 13" Retina. What graphic board does your MBP 15" Retina use, is it the top-on-the-line Nvidia model?

@AlexanderKillen: What Mac model do you use? Did you replace the original d3d9.dll file in the Fallout 3 folder with the one from the d3d9.dll for Intel GPU folder?
@mactrix I´m apologizing for my lack of active attention and making to fast conclusions. It was the d3d9.dll file. And hereby i´m just gonna leave an approval here that this port works for 10.9.5 mavericks 2.5 ghz i5, 4gb ddr3, Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 Mb macbook pro 13" middle 2012 version.

Just wanna leave a thank you for making this port and i will come back later for further update after i have finished the game or experiencing any bugs.
The .dmg doesn't open, simply comes up with a "Resource temporarily unavailable" message...
@mdashwell: That's an OS X issue. Please move the DMG to the desktop folder, restart your computer and try again.
winery says to install an engine, which one should i chose?
@robertearlkeen: The engine is included in this Wineskin wrapper. I am not sure why you are asked to install an engine. The one originally used in this wrapper is WS9Wine1.7.27.

The latest available version is 1.7.35. You can always try new ones by downloading them with the Wineskin Winery app. They become then available in Wineskin in the 'Advanced' settings under 'Tools' and then click 'Change Engine Used'. I recommend to check the release notes before installing new engines: https://www.winehq.org/announce/1.7.35

You can always switch engines so if something doesn't work with a new version you can select 1.7.27 again.
Im back just to report that it´s has almost unbearable fps on my mac. As expected. Even tough the temperature is surprisingly low.
@AlexanderKillen, thanks for reporting back. It seems the Intel HD Graphics 4000 isn't suitable for the game. There is nothing I can do to improve this. What you can try on your end is using the Wineskin Winery app (http://wineskin.urgesoftware.com) to download other engines (see my other post from today above). Then select the engines in the Wineskin app within the wrapper. I would also give WS9WineCX14.0.0 a try as well as the latest WS9Wine1.7.35. Just try and error.
"impossible to open wineskin.app" when i open wineskin.app why???? i can use wineskin winery and how?
@Vaz!?: If your OS X security settings only allow to open software from identified developers and/or the Mac App Store, make a ctrl-click/right-click on the Wineskin icon and choose Open from the contextual menu.
Hi,

I have an iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2010) with Yosemite v. 10.10.2 with ATI Radeon graphics. As far as I know I have done everything accordingly however when I finally launch Fallout it opens a small window but closes it almost immediately. The whole app then just quits. Reinstalling right now just in case I did anything wrong. Any ideas what the problem could be?
HOLY SH!T LOL

I got it to work. I basically just chose the simple install when installing (the one requiring more disk space). My first time installing this I chose custom. Not entirely sure if that was the problem but yeah. When I reinstalled, I didn't delete any files on the wrapper, I just installed it again. I'm using Yosemite 10.10.2 btw. Thanks mactrix!
I've given up on trying to play PC games on a Mac. Add-ons aren't present and I realized whenever you set it to windowed, from that point forward it will keep crashing. However, it does work on 10.10.2, just don't change any settings after installing and you're good.
