Skyrim Special Edition will (sadly) NOT work. 64bit applications are not yet supported in Wine.
Now supports the Enderal total conversion! (Details below.)

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an action role-playing open world video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth installment in The Elder Scrolls action role-playing video game series, following The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Skyrim was released on November 11, 2011, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Three downloadable content (DLC) add-ons were released—Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn—which were repackaged into The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Legendary Edition, which released on June 4, 2013.

Skyrim's main story revolves around the player character's efforts to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. The game is set two hundred years after the events of Oblivion and takes place in the fictional province of Skyrim. Over the course of the game, the player completes quests and develops the character by improving skills. Unlike previous Elder Scrolls games, Skyrim does not require the player to select a character class at the beginning of the game, negating a problem which the development team felt that previous entries had by forcing the player into a rigid play-style too early into the game. Skyrim continues the open world tradition of its predecessors by allowing the player to travel anywhere in the game world at any time, and to ignore or postpone the main storyline indefinitely.

The game was developed using the in-house Creation Engine, built specifically for the game. The team opted for a more unique and diverse game world than Oblivion's Cyrodiil, which game director and executive producer Todd Howard considered less interesting by comparison. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was released to critical acclaim, with reviewers particularly responding well to the refined character development and setting. The game shipped over seven million copies to retailers within the first week of its release, and sold over 20 million copies across all three platforms.

My System Specs:
- OS: Mac OS X 10.11.1
- CPU: 2,8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
- RAM: 8 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
- Video: ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB
- Used disk space: 15.5 GB (Game, all expansions and HD texture pack)
- TESV Skyrim version: 1.9.32.0.8

Whats the benefit of this wrapper compared to any other one you'll find on Porting Team?
- It lets you play the regular DRM version of Skyrim which you can buy via Steam.
- Because of that you will be able to use Steam Workshop to get mods.
- Even better: You can use SKSE! (See „Installation“; 13-20)
- The wrapper has the Steam compatibility of my Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion wrapper and the performance of DanIsTheMan’s Skyrim wrapper. Best of both worlds and will hopefully overcome all your previous problems with other wrappers.

Additional info:
- Using the HD textures will make the game look great but also takes some performance. If you consider on using this and/or a lot mods tinkering with graphics remember that this may cause the game to act sloppy or freeze.
- Now this is important: The wrapper is pre-set to use 1GB (1024MB) of graphics memory. This setting needs to be adjusted depending on what you have. (See „Installation“; 6-12)

Known issues:
- The wrapper may take a while to start. Just wait for the Steam login to appear. This can take up to 30 seconds.
- Whenever you start Skyrim it will open up a little window telling something is going to be installed -> it won’t. An error window will appear; close it and the game will proceed. Fixed in 1.3! (For 1.0-1.2 users see „Installation“; 21-26)
- The game will crash on quitting! Just use force quit (cmd+alt+esc) if you get stuck in a frozen Skyrim screen. Don’t worry, it won’t hurt the game. (Remember to save your game first!)

Installation manual:

[Decompress the .7z file with Keka it is freeware. StuffIt Expander will NOT work.]

1. Double-click the The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim wrapper and Steam will be starting.
2. Steam installs itself. Wait for it.

3. Log into your Steam account.
3.1 If Steam accidentally set the language to german click on "Steam" in the Steam menu bar and choose "Einstellungen".
3.2 Press on the tab named "Oberfläche".
3.3 Choose your favorite language from the drop down menu at the top and press ok.
4. Install The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. (You need to have purchased the game first.)
5. Upon completion of the installation process quit the wrapper (You will also notice a Steam icon in the menu bar of OSX -> You can click it and chose „Quit“ there as well).

[Now we need to set the graphics memory that should be used depending on what your card provides.]

6. Right-click the Skyrim wrapper and select "Show package content".
7. Open Wineskin.
8. Go to „Advanced“ -> „Tools“ -> „Winetricks“.
9. Search for „memory“.
10. There will be 4 options (512MB, 1024MB, 2048MB and default) to choose from. Choose what fits your graphics card – if nothing fits choose „default“ – and press „run“.
11. As soon as you see „Winetricks Commands Finished!!“ you are done. Close everything.
12. You can now start up the wrapper and play Skyrim. Have fun!

[So, coming up next: Getting SKSE working. Mods rely on it a lot.]

13. Go to http://skse.silverlock.org and download the installer file (NOT the .7z archive) of the current build.
14. Right-click the Skyrim wrapper and select "Show package content".
15. Open Wineskin.
16. Select „Install Software“ -> „Choose Setup Executable“.
17. Navigate to wherever the downloaded SKSE installer is (probably in your „Downloads“ folder), select it and press „Choose“.
18. Installation starts. Press „Next“. Then uncheck „Desktop Shortcut“ and press „Next“ again. Wait for the installation to finish and press „Close“
19. Wait a short moment. Probably Wineskin will come up with an error. Ignore and close it.
20. You are done. Close Wineskin. SKSE is now installed.

[Fix for error message on starting up Skyrim. You only need to do this if you have version 1.0 of the wrapper!]

21. Right-click the Skyrim wrapper and select "Show package content".
22. Open Wineskin.
23. Go to „Advanced“ -> „Tools“ -> „Registry Editor“.
24. Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Valve\Steam\Apps\72850
25. Right-click in free area within the right side of the window (where you find the columns name, type and data) and choose „New“ and then „DWORD Value“.
26. Set the name of the new value to „vcredist“; double-click the value, set „Value data:“ to 1; press „Ok“
27. From the menu bar choose „Registry“ and then „Exit“.
28. You are done. Close Wineskin. The error message on starting up Skyrim is gone.

[Fix for error message on starting up Skyrim. You only need to do this if you have version 1.0-1.2 of the wrapper!]
[Revert the changes of the old fix first!]

21. Right-click the Skyrim wrapper and select "Show package content".
22. Open Wineskin.
23. Go to „Advanced“ -> „Tools“ -> „Winetricks“.

24. Search for „msxml3, choose it and press "run".
25. As soon as you see „Winetricks Commands Finished!!“ you are done. Close everything.
26. You can now start up the wrapper and play Skyrim. Next time steam wants to install vcredist it will go through flawlessly and never bother you again. Have fun!

NOTE: When using mods remember to activate downloaded mods! To do so go to „Data Files“ within the Skyrim launcher window and check the mods and DLCs you want to use.
NOTE 2: SKSE will not be listed in „Data Files“. It’s a script pack that acts in the background. When correctly installed SKSE will be mentioned at Skyrims version number at the bottom left of the games settings menu indicating that it is running.

NOTE3: Make sure to deactivate all Skyrim mods which you have subscribed to. You find the option within the Enderal Launcher.

Troubleshooting - Have a problem? Look here:
- Not allowed to start the wrapper: Gatekeeper denies software which is not certified by Apple. Gatekeeper options are found in Apple menu > System Preferences… > Security & Privacy > General tab under the header "Allow applications downloaded from:". Check "Anywhere".
- "Data Files" is greyed out: Go to user/Documents/My Games/Skyrim. Put the SkyrimPrefs.ini in the trash and start the game. In most cases this does the job. If not you'll find other possible solutions in the comments on page 4.
- The game performs poorly or even freezes: If you're on a mobile graphics processor (Intel HD or Iris) the game may tell you to get highest graphic settings. This is a mistake by the software. Try reducing your settings by at least the half.
- Loading screens taking forever (>30 seconds): This seems to be a problem with older versions of OS X. Try updating your operating system to the latest version (at least to Yosemite 10.10.5).
- Texture errors appearing (wrongly and multicolored textures): Either your graphic settings are set too high and/or a mod is interfering. Reduce you're settings and/or get rid of the faulty mod.
- Game Pad isn't working: Have a look at this video tutorial >click me<. It was brought to my attention that for this to work you need an updated driver that can be found >here<
- Steam doesn't load its content (black store and community; library still accessible): For experimental fixes have a look at this page >click me< (scroll to "Steam Client Build Issues"). [I will provide a fixed wrapper version as soon as its no longer experimental]
- FNIS compatibility: FNIS will not work in Wine (see comments on page 28 for details). Maybe future iterations of FNIS or Wine will change this but as of this date (June 30, 2016) it's not working.

Enderal Troubleshooting:
- Patching progress is buggy/not finishing: Have look at this page. If their solutions don't work try to update your launcher manually. Just re-download the current launcher and replace your old one within the Skyrim directory. Make sure you get the appropriate launcher (language) for your installation or the game will be messed up! German launcher; english launcher.

Yo ANARATH!!  Happy belated thanksgiving and just wanted to say that I appreciate you for taking the time to do this and read all these comments! Keep up the good work and stay chill!

Thanks a lot, pal. I really appreciate your kind words :)

Hope you'll have a happy christmas time - and everyone else of course too ^^
Downloaded Skyrim Enderal 101E and used Keka to decompress the .7z file. Went to open it but nothing shows up. Steam does not open, and I don't know what is happening.

Sounds strange. Maybe the download is corrupted or Steam just needs a bit time for itself. What were your steps so far in trying to get the problem solved?

I figured it out, I downloaded the wrong wrapper. I installed the new one and it runs great!

Hey Ziggy, I'm dealing with a similar issue - downloaded the wrapper, try to run it and nothing happens, Steam or otherwise. I downloaded the English wrapper for Enderal 1.0.1, and I'm running High Sierra.

Which wrapper did you have more success with? I'm running out of things to try to get it to work, final move will be to try the non-enderal version, but I'd rather like to check that out if possible.

And thanks Anarath for all the work/guides!

Edit: The non-enderal works perfectly, although I'm running a 2017 MacBook with the i7 processor. It works great on low settings, so even if I could get the Enderal wrapper to work, may not be worth it due to lag (unless there's no performance drop).

Sadly I can't help you in this particular case since I'm not yet on High Sierra. And I probably won't for the coming 1-2 months.

But I can tell you the chances of playing Enderal if you can tell me what graphics card you have installed.

Did you get the right wrapper for your OS version? Did you use Keka to decompress the .7z?
Hi there,

Do you have any ideas about performance issues.
For some reason, when I click on the button in steam to launch game it will oftern start then immedatly close before I even get to the laucnher. it does this on both my hackintosh and Macbook pro. Both sytems on 10.13.2  Using a newer version of the wine engine and the game wont even play. I dont have this issue with a older version of your wrapper in Snow Leopard on my MBP, but under that wrapper in SL with wine I get very poor performance. I used to play in a Cider warpper and that seemed to give far better fps but lesser modding ablitiy... and I now use about 30 mods, none of which improve the games look beyond your character.

Even on my hackntosh with its RX480 I cant play on full ultra, doing so the game crashes on the load screen just as it fully loads my save and I'm yet to even try the higher quality texture packs.
My macbook pro 2011 seems to get the same slight laggyness regardless of playing it on low settings, dropping or raising my resolution or using high textures. Its HD6750 used to be okay in cider but at the moment under the winestaging engine  changing gfx settings seems to do nothing to help my performance.
On my hackintosh I set the wrapper to use 2048 ram instaed of your default 1gb but that only helped a litle bit.. but the game stil crashes on the loading screen if I raise any of my other gfx settings beyond meduim while keeping my textures on high.
Going into windows 10 on my hackintosh the performance difference is like night and day... but I pretty much never use windows...

Any ideas on what could be causing such average perormance?

You actually answered it yourself already ;) The difference lies between macOS and Windows - within the drivers to be more specific. And the fact we need to use a wrapper for Skyrim.
If you want to use Skyrim on Mac you better set all graphic settings to low or medium (textures above medium will always crash it; and I doubt that medium will be still enough to play w/o crashes). You can test what your system is capable of by changing the settings step by step and try to run the game.
oh. LOL I could never play on low textures...
I played about 300 hrs on my old macbook pro with the wrappered (Cider) version in OSX quite happily with high textures and with very rare crashes. Im not saying it was super fast or anything, but it was stable both on high Textures in cider and in the version of the wrapper by DanIsTheMan version of the wine wrapper that I found soon after it was released on here. Everything else was natualy turned all the way down except resolution... Guess I'll just have to limit what else I increase above minimum on my hackintosh then... cant be bothered going into windows...
And do you have a buggy launcher or thats fine in your sistem?
