Personal Notes:
As always my personal goal is to provide the easiest and smoothest installation process through an official PC version of Steam. Some additional steps are required to get GTA IV to work on OS X and some restrictions apply depending your hardware. Running the game on OS X requires quite some hardware resources. It plays quite well on my two MacBook Pro laptops but stronger machines like an iMac 5K or even a Mac Pro seem a better choice. I expect performance improvements over time with newer Wine engines. Please read the instructions about how to update the wrapper to newer Wine engines and leave comments about your experience.

The wrapper is configured to run Steam but Steam is not yet installed. Please follow the instructions below to install and run Steam. After this you can download the official version of GTA IV on Steam and play the game on this wrapper under OS X.

If you update the Wine engine of this wrapper to version WS9Wine1.7.49 or later then you can remove the dwrite and msxml3 overrides in winecfg since a major bug has been fixed in this release (see https://bugs.winehq....ug.cgi?id=31374).

My System Specs:
  • OS: OS X 10.10.4
  • CPU: Core i5 2.4GHz, Core i7 2.2GHz
  • RAM: 8 GB
  • Video: Intel Iris, Intel HD 3000, AMD Radeon HD 6750M
  • Disk Space: 173 MB for wrapper only, 17.29 GB for Steam and GTA IV
Known Issues:
  • The game doesn't launch directly after the installation and the first initial setup process. Make sure you follow the installation instructions to solve this.
  • The game menu performs very slow on first launch. Make sure you follow the installation instructions to set the menu correctly to a 60 Hz resolution.
  • The game may not detect the video memory of your graphics board correctly. In this case the Graphics menu shows less video memory than there should be available. Make sure you follow the installation instructions to copy the commandline.txt file into the game directory. You may need to adjust the -availablevidmem 2 entry in the commandline.txt file. For example I had to increase the value to -availablevidmem 20 for the Intel Iris graphic board on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013).
  • Important: Click the Minimize button (third button from the right) in the upper right corner of the Steam window after you clicked the Play button and after you see the Social Club window. You have to hide the Steam window before you start playing the game. Otherwise the game will somehow perform mouse clicks on the Steam interface which will cause the game window to switch to Steam (see https://bugs.winehq....ug.cgi?id=38958). Minimizing the Steam main window will prevent this glitch. You can see the minimized Steam icon in the lower left corner and open it from there again.
  • The first seconds of the first intro scene remain black.
  • Graphic glitches on characters appear with an ATI/AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphic board on a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011) but on the other hand the game is very stable on this setup. Any other users with ATI/AMD and Nvidia graphic boards, please provide feedback.
  • The graphic glitches don't occur with an Intel Iris graphic board on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013) but sadly on this setup the game tends to freeze on cutscenes.
Most issues can be reviewed in the video guide on YouTube: https://www.youtube....h?v=xLeE89sVSxo

1. Steam Installation:
  • Download the Steam.exe file for Windows at store.steampowered.com
  • Download the Steam on Wine (GTA4) wrapper from the download link on this page.
  • Unzip the downloaded Steam on Wine (GTA4).zip file.
  • Hold the ctrl key and make a mouse click on the unzipped Steam on Wine wrapper icon.
  • Select Show Package Contents in the contextual menu.
  • Make a ctrl-click/right-click on the Wineskin icon and choose Open from the contextual menu (see https://support.apple.com/kb/PH14365 for details).
  • Perform the following steps In the Winskin window:
    • Click the Install Software button.
    • Click Choose Setup Executable.
    • Select the Steam.exe file you downloaded from store.steampowered.com.
    • Run the Steam installation.
    • Close the Winskin application after the installation has been completed successfully. You can now just double-click the Steam on Wine (GTA4) app to launch the Windows version of Steam on OS X.
The Steam installation process can be reviewed in the video guide on YouTube: https://www.youtube....h?v=xLeE89sVSxo

2. Installing GTA IV:
This is not different to any other Steam installation. Just install the game through Steam. After the installation click Play to initiate the first time setup. You will notice some installation routines for DirectX and Windows LIVE as well as an activation process.
  • The Social Club login window shows up. You can click Play (Offline) but nothing will happen. Just quit Steam.
  • Hold the ctrl key and make a mouse click on the Steam on Wine (GTA IV) wrapper icon.
  • Select Show Package Contents in the contextual menu.
  • Inside the wrapper go to the /drive_c/GTA4 XNetStartup Fix/ folder.
  • Move or copy all files from the GTA4 XNetStartup Fix folder to /Program Files/Steam/SteamApps/common/Grand Theft Auto IV/GTAIV/.
  • Close all windows.
  • Hold the ctrl key and make a mouse click on the Steam on Wine (GTA IV) wrapper icon.
  • Select Open in the contextual menu. Steam will launch.
  • In Steam select Grand Theft Auto IV and click Play.
  • Click Play (Offline) in the Social Club login window, then click OK. Wait a few seconds.
  • The game intro plays very choppy. Don't worry about it.
  • You will notice that you can hardly move the mouse. Use the keyboard instead.
  • Press the Right Arrow key to select the Options text button. The button will be highlighted in orange when selected. Press Enter/Return.
  • In the next screen use the Right Arrow key to navigate to the Graphics text button. Press the Esc key if you are stuck in one of the menus.
  • Press Enter/Return when the Graphics text button is selected. This enables the Video Mode setting.
  • Press the Left Arrow key to reduce the resolution. Select a 60 Hz resolution, for example 1280 x 800 (60 Hz). The selected resolution will be highlighted in orange.
  • Press the Space key to confirm your new settings.
  • Press Enter/Return again within 15 seconds to save the changes.
  • You will now notice that your mouse speed behaves normally. You can go through all the menu options and adjust your settings.
  • Return to the main menu to play the game.
Optional but recommended:
  • Move or copy the commandline.txt file from the GTA4 Commandline File folder to the /Program Files/Steam/SteamApps/common/Grand Theft Auto IV/GTAIV/ folder. Please note that you may need to edit the commandline.txt file to play well with your system configuration (see the example above in the Known Issues section).
Optional but recommended:
  • Select the installscript.vdf file in the /Program Files/Steam/SteamApps/common/Grand Theft Auto IV/GTAIV/ folder.
  • Hold the ctrl key and make a mouse click on the file.
  • Select Compress "installscript.vdf" in the contextual menu. This creates a zipped backup file.
  • Delete the installscript.vdf file. Please note: Deleting the file will prevent any game related installation process in the future. Just restore the original file from the zip backup and everything will be just like before.
The GTA IV installation process can be reviewed in the video guide on https://www.youtube....h?v=xLeE89sVSxo

Updating Wine
Wine gets continuously updated. In most cases performance and stability improve with new releases. You need the Wineskin Winery app to download the latest Wine engines for OS X.
  • Download Wineskin Winery here: http://wineskin.urge...?page=Downloads
  • Unzip the downloaded file and place the Wineskin Winery app to a location of your choice.
  • Open the Wineskin Winery app.
  • Click the + button where it says New engine(s) available!
  • Select the newest engine.
  • Click Download and Install, then click OK.
  • Quit the Wineskin Winery app.
  • Open the Wineskin app from within the game wrapper.
  • Click Advanced.
  • Click the Tools tab.
  • Click Change Engine Used on the lower right under Wrapper Tools.
  • Select the latest engine you installed before in the Wineskin Winery app.
  • Click OK.
  • A test run will be performed automatically. Just go through it or quit/abort it.
  • Quit the Wineskin app.
I am using WS9Wine1.7.52 on this wrapper. Use the comments to share your experience with new versions.

nice port bro :)
Hey, there's a problem while installing Steam on the Wineskin.
Thing is, when i choose the executable, the SteamSetup.exe, I get an error message, saying it could not find the .exe.
I downloaded the installer of the steam official website.
I'm stuck here, any help?

Cheers !

EDIT : the message says "No New Executables Found"
Running on :
iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013)
2,9 GHz Intel Core i5
8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
nVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 1024 MB

And wineskin version 1.7.52
@TheBoxSmasher: I never encountered this issue. The latest Wineskin engine is WS9Wine1.9.2. Can you try updating to this one an try again please?
Hey.. Why always Freezing on cutscene's and glitch when car hit.. sorry for my bad english. =)

Please notice me senpai ! =)
@blackrosez: See Known Issues. What graphic board do you have?

Try also updating to newer engines. WS9Wine1.9.11 is the most current one.
its Connor from youtube but as i was saying no i can't get to main menu i also can not get open the game up it just stays small on the bottom left of my screen
Hi Connor,

you do see the Steam screen and you click Play in Steam?
well i what i have done i click play and minimize steam and the social club screen will come up i click play offline and the game starts after the first bit of text comes up the game crashes and gta 4 appears to minimized however it is still running but does black when it gets to the menu, furthermore i can not do anything with the gta and after i click ok to the error message the game will disappear
Is it really the game that crashes or does it say the steamwebhelper.exe crashes?
it is the game that crashes it says off the top of my head "GTA 4 FATAL ERROR OUT OF VIDEO MEMORY. please reboot your system"
Got it.

If we're out of luck then it simply doesn't run on your Mac. The hardware should really do it according this video: https://www.youtube....h?v=ZTDEy7lMeYk and this post (same MacBook Air then yours): http://steamcommunit...76837950797724/

However, this could be a Wine issue in combination with your Mac. Can you please first try to update to the latest Wine engine WS9Wine1.9.11? Please follow the instructions under Updating Wine.
alright i will try updating wine and i will get back to you as soon as possible
Ok so i have updated the wrapper to 1.9.11 however now when i open it steam on wine just closes. I should also mention that i have parental controls so i have to put my password in order to use it however after i put my password in steam on wine will open and then close
wait never mind that i just had to update a few extra things however when i try to play i still get the same error message
Can you check the screen options in Wineskin for this wrapper.

Does it look like the one below?
