Global Message: Welcome to The Porting Team v3!
Still some things missing here and there, but we are working on it.
Take a look at the Forums, check out the Port Database, or head over to the Tutorials section while we work on getting the website & all previous Ports fully online.

As some of you may have noticed, it seems that one of the largest file hosters in the world has been shut down.

http://techland.time...haring-website/

The Team is still trying to figure out how we'll be migrating, but hold on to your backups as we may need your help in restoring a large amount of lost wrappers. We apologize for the inconvenience caused, but some things are sadly beyond our control. :(

Here's an overview of what happened and what's currently going on:
http://arstechnica.c...-megaupload.ars

An quick update on recent events:
FileSonic has disabled file sharing, as well as FileServe. Uploaded.to has blocked anyone from the US being able to use it's site. Other file sharing sites are taking similar action as well.

Since a lot of Wrappers and other content has been hosted on Megaupload, FileSonic and FileServe, some Ports in the Port Database have broken download links.

What to do if you notice a broken Download link:
- Step 1: click the 'Is this Port link broken?' Link on the bottom of a Port and report it broken.

- Step 2: Personal Message the Porter (uploader) to reupload the Port's Wrapper or other content again to a different file hoster.

To PM a Porter, click his Avatar (picture) and click the 'Send me a message' Button.

This is a sad day indeed. :(

The US are really keen on the anti-privacy thing. They arrested the founders of Megaupload in New Zealand

It depends how other sites have handled their pirated content. It looks like the leading information going against megaupload is evidence showing that the people running it were aware of the majority of their contents being pirated files, and have even shared pirated files between each other in the past. If other sites have done the same, then sure, they could be next. If anything, I'd say rapidshare is next for being the second biggest. But that's my opinion...

And earlier today, someone mentioned to me that google is probably next: by their books, google links to millions of sites containing pirated content, and some pirated content.

Megadowner...

I wonder if this will invoke lawsuits against official authorities, because a lot of legal & open source software was hosted on their servers as well.
Megaupload even had company rabates for hosted company content.

Edit: made this an announcement

Is anyone really surprised? Sites like Megaupload have TONS of illegal copyrighted content. It was inevitable that something like this would come to pass. One it's all said and done is what should be worried about now. The precedence this will set and how it was all performed is where the attention really needs to point. at least imho

You'll need a mod or an admin to remove it. For the time being, just send me or any other active mod a PM with a link to the fixed port's page.

Considered the amount of ports that'll need to be reuploaded, though, I guess we're gonna set up something easier on us later today.

I removed the broken flag from your Diablo II port.

I removed the broken flag from your Diablo II port.

I was thinking of a support topic in the forum, where users post the topics they want to get the broken flag removed.
Easiest way, and we'll see each new reply, and act to it.

Only moderators and above should have the permission to remove the broken flag, to avoid issues by the reporters and the up loaders.
The moderators are the police of this site so to speak.

A sub moderator category for the port database could be made, with a few people with some limited control/overview of all ports.

Noobish question, perhaps, but why do we need to use these filesharing sites that are at risk for shutdown at all? Couldn't we use sourceforge, or download straight from the porting team's website?

Wrappers are often not so small, and the amount of traffic this stuff generates is insane (in the multiple terabyte range) only file hoster's can handle that traffic range.

edit:
Sourceforge has limited disk space for projects, and i'm not sure their TOS allows pre-made wrappers.
Wrappers often have stuff installed in them like directX or PhysiX, which is not Open Source. And I don't need to mention cider or CXx wrappers at all...

Bandwidth isn't free. Also SF? Seriously.

At least the Cider wrappers are questionable. Sure Wineskin wrappers might live on github or sf but not Crossover wrapper or Cider.

I've been using MU for ages, because it offers great speed and much space.

I dunno what site to use now, maybe Mediafire?
Any suggestions would be great, preferably free and I need a few gigs, since I have over 30 ports I want to host.
I've been thinking about dropbox, but I need a secondary account for that since I'm already using my dropbox a lot and I'm not sure how multiple accounts could sync on same machine.

If you need to run more than one account, it's possible with a little trick. http://www.makeuseof...ltaneously-mac/

but, as dafootballer said, right now RS doesn't seem so bad. Not as good as MU was, but usable enough. I haven't decided yet on what host I should use myself yet though.

I personally use MediaFire myself. It's really fast in most places (including where I am). I can never get RapidShare to work right, so usually if I see a RapidShare hosted-wrapper, that's an instant no-download for me. Just my .02. :)

FOund a very easy solution. Instead of going thru the process syao posted (thank a lot I'm sure I'll get use for it some day)
I just made a second dropbox account on one of my other accounts on my machine, just switching over to another account and add the port there.
Already updated five ports, gonna do the rest tomorrow, except those I need to repack, but all will get over in a matter of days.

You do know that Dropbox shuts down your account if you get high traffic?
They've shut down my own account two or three times for multiple days because of "high traffic".
With "high traffic" I mean they have absolute control over your dropbox account, and will shut it down if their system detects that files get downloaded often.

Bandwidth isn't free, and they even shut down the accounts from paying clients if they detect lots of file downloads from multiple IP's.

Dropbox isn't a file hoster, jut a personal backup solution.

For this reason dropbox links can't be saved with linksave's protection.
