Epic Games and Valve Software announced they have inked a deal that will see the Valve's free Steamworks tools more easily available to all Unreal Engine 3 licensees.

It almost seems that valve is spearheading an effort to bring developers over to the Mac platform with native ports. If the unreal engine was designed to cross compile on PC/MAC/360/PS3 like Source and id Tech 5, that would be a huge boon for Mac games.

Not likely. Two different rendering engines (UE3 v Source). It would be nice if it was "that simple". UT3 for Mac has obviously fallen through with what ever port studio was supposed to do it.

I think the point being that Epic has been making their engine platform agnostic, PC, 360, iphone, Android, etc. With Valve pushing for more universal content for Steam and more engine developers making Platform agnostic engines for wider distribution. Especially with id tech 5 and Source being able to compile cross platform.

Wrong. Do you even know what Steamworks is? It's a set of tools to prep a game for release via Steam. So this is distribution, not so much development. Yes, Source is now being ported to the Mac. I'm actually not even sure if Source is on the PS3. Left4Dead 2 sure is not on the PS3.
Unreal Engine 3 has become a almost-industry standard because of it's integration of third party software. Steamworks is the logical next step, especially now that the U3 SDK is available for free for non-commercial projects. These projects can then be distributed for free via Steam.
In fact, the only two major development studios supporting cross-platform development with native versions from the start are id and Blizzard. id's record is a bit flawed with Wolfenstein, but they will make it up with Rage. Blizzard of course bringing Diablo III and Starcraft 2 to the Mac.

UT3 was supposed to be ported by Ryan Gordon, which is an individual, not a company. Reportedly, and backed up by screenshots, he did port the renderer. But he either not port the third party libraries since that would be an insane amount of work or because the licence situation did not allow for it.
