Half - Life and Portal can show you that FPS can be smart enough, and not only shoot and run.
Totally there with ya, I loved half-life 2, especially the gravity gun AMAZING FUN, try playing the game with just the GG lol, Portal also amazing, had so much fun with it. Quake 4 also real fun, didnt play the others in the series.
I have played a number of FPS games and yes some have similar weapon sets or "feel".
though I believe the similar feel is due mostly to the fact that everything is laid out so linearly. Yet not. What I mean is, you are guided along a set path, but you stil have to figure out how to follow that path, puzzles, obstacles, enemies. Puzzles, challenging bosses requiring in-depth strategy, and a good story that makes it feel like you are playing through a movie; something you can get immersed in. And let's not forget when the adrenaline starts pounding through your veins... That is what makes the FPS for me. Though I love playing nearly all genre of games.
Most definitely recommend Bioshock to anybody searching for that awesome, immersive, well-scripted(thus far), shit-your-pants exciting(an a lil scary) FPS.
Highly recommend Portal, though it should be noted, you don't really shoot the enemies in it...
