Most of you guys have probably noticed that I love RPGs, and I'm sure there is a lot of you guys that do it as well.
So why not make a thread about RPGs, where we can discuss games we have played, games we would love to play and the games that was just an ok waste of time :)
I've been into RPGs my whole life, even before they came to computers. Early 90s (it's still awhile until i get 30!) I got a Dungeons and Dragons book (normal DnD, not ADnD), and it was one of the first books I ever read myself. A few months later when I started to grasp the concept, me and some friends decided to start playing DnD! I did that for a few years and when computer RPGs came around, I was hooked! Fallout and Diablo  was the first RPGs I bought myself. Although I had played a few shareware titles like Realmz, The Odyssey and Prince Of Destruction.

List of RPGs I've played:
Spoiler

List RPGs I have to play and already own (damn you digital download sales!)
Spoiler

I'm pretty sure I forgot some titles while making this list.

Games I play now:

Vampire Masquerade Bloodlines.
I must just say, that I never expected this. I picked this one up ages ago on sale and really never got to play it.
Ever since twilight and true blood teenage vampire love has been all over tv and everything it really didn't feel right to play it :p
Then I decided to try it and port it, since it was already an older cider port from 2009 on this forum.

First I just thought I should play for an hour or two to check that it was a stable port, but then I got hooked!
I've been working late shift this week so I've had a lot of time on my hand, and I've played this game all the time (on my MBA)
Now I've played like 3-5 hrs every day since monday and I really can't stop until I finish this (and I'm still working on finishing up NWN2!)
I've heard the game isn't that long and should be like 20-25hrs, so I guess I'm more than half way.

Neverwinter Nights 2
I've been meaning to play this for a very long time, when it came out I did mostly play WoW (no more, although I pop in to say hi to guildies from time to time).
When I later got time to play (since WoW was not taking my time) I got myself Dragon Age and that took like almost half a year to complete (with all dlc and awakening).

When this game was on steam sale this summer I really kew that this was the time to get it! And then i bought it, played 1 hr and found it booring, what a mistake!
A friend convinced me that I just had to get thru the first hour of the game and it would all be so much better, and it did! I've been playing this 2-3 nights a week now for about a month and I do believe I'm halfway thru the main campaign. For a old DnD junkie this is really a fix! Game play is good, although before I found out to get the camera to behave like I like it was a bit annoying and I can't play this with anything other than mouse.

The story is so far very solid, with good in-game cinematics and acting. Compared to older DnD games it seems a bit restricting, with the non open world map, but it still maintains a bit openworld-ish (like Dragon Age). The first hour of the game was horrible, but the rest is great! I've also hard that the first expansion is supposed to be even better!
I guess I'll have fun with this until christmas!

SpellForce 2
The plan was that this game should be the one I would play on my MBA when I'm not home, or just wanna sit in the couch instead of in my office.
Now It seems Vampire M.B is taking this time, but I'm gonna pick this one right up again (with the speed im going thru VMB i'm sure it won't be too long)

Start discussions!!

edit: and by the way, www.gog.com has super RPG sale (all DnD titles) this weekend!

Hehe.

I already see that I forgot some when I look at your screenshot.
You're even more old school that I am it seems with loads of games that was published early 90s and late 80s.

I do have kotor2 but haven't played it yet, but I liked Mass Effect 2 (which i never would have played if I didn't get it for free from bioware, was some kinda promotion since I had both Da:O and Da2).

I heard ME was very inspired from Kotor

I like old school RPGs I guess...

I still think Might and Magic 3, and the 4/5 combo were some of the best... along with Crusaders of the dark savant (wizardry 7)... and the Eye of the Beholder series

I like BG1 and 2 a lot too, as well as NWN and NWN2

Best thread ever!

I normally prefer JRPGs compared to WRPGS.

Very few on computer though and most do not work with Wine, ie Breath of Fire IV (works on Leopard) and Grandia II does not work.

My favorites are most older games on the SNES.

Following games I love:

Console

Dragon Quest I
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy VII
Secret of Mana
Secret of Evermore
Super Mario RPG
Breath of Fire 1 and 2.
Suikoden II
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
Tales of Vesperia
Eternal Sonata

For PC/Mac

Ultima 4, 6, 7 and Serpent Isle.  I did not like 6 with the tiny screen. I have a place in my heart for IX - it could have / should have been great.
Ultima Underworld 1 - I hated 2!
Realms of Arcania
Dragon Age Origins
Ys - The Oath in Felghana
Pool of Radiance
Anvil of Dawn
Silver
Betrayal at Krondor

I will through in Final Fantasy XI as well - I was hooked long ago - and several fun times with friends.

Next game to play is:

Debating between Lost Odyssey and The Witcher and Lennus II

I'm not as big into RPG's as you guys are, but Morrowind really made a deep impression on me. If you haven't played it, you have to at least try it out for ten minutes. Much better atmosphere and story than Oblivion's in my opinion. Oblivion is typical medieval fantasy, whereas in Morrowind, you really feel out of place.

I forgot about Dragon Warrior... I still have several of them as roms for snes emulator... the first one was the best, very awesome game.

And a lot of the Ultimas were very fun too.... I remember playing Ultima Exodus like 509298329 hours on my SNES (or maybe was NES) when I was a lot younger :-P

I still have a ton of these games for NES and SNES emulators I have, just for nostalgia reasons.

Betrayl at Krondor might be very dated graphically, but its still like the best RPG ever in many ways....

I must say that Oblivion is one of the bigger disappointments I've had.
I really didn't like the first person perspective and third person doesn't work that well I felt.

The start is as bad as Nwn2 and the next few missions just feel weak.
The city also feels dead with very few and stupid interactions with the npcs.

I should be said I have only played it for two nights, and I might pick it up later to see if it gets better.
(I did that with Nwn2 and Two Worlds2 and they both was pretty good after awhile)

bump.
Loved the original fallouts , and maybe even more of fallout new vegas. RPG's are really addicting when they have a good story line. Also i've played Fable 1 , and own Fable 2 for xbox 360 though I have not touched it yet.

Fallout 1 and 2 was amazing, especially Fallout 2. I've replayed them several times!
I also like Fallout NV, and Fallout 3. NV was definitely better than Fallout 3, which wasn't too open wordlist due to the amount of subways you had to go thru. I didn't like the final boss in FNV, it was too easy and felt unfinished.

Fallout 2 especially is so huge, and I'd recommend replaying the "New Reno" part several times, it could almost be a separate game :D

In New Vegas i hate when they spawn 100+ robots , if you go with yes man. At the very end after you beat legate lanius and you confront general lee oliver , behind him 100 robots spawn and that drags down my fps to 1-2 frames and becomes unplayable

Played in windows7 on my MBP 2010 model and had no performance issues at all. Steady 60 fps at all times at high-ish settings :p I didn't go with yes man tho.

I didn't have any performance problems at all until that part. Guess my cpu is crap then. Also I tried to go with the NCR , but it was just fun to go with Yes Man , because I don't like Mr. House , didn't care for the NCR much , and Caesars Legion looked good , but are weak and pathetic in the long run considering how they control hardly nothing in the mojave.

I liked Borderlands.

It's not so much RPG, although it has several RPG elements.
A bit much shooting for my taste. If you think Fallout 3/NV is good, but has too much story and too little shooting, then Borderlands is exactly what you long for.

I had very much fun with it and it has very good shooting mechanics and extremely many weapons (developers claim there are 250.000 different weapons in game).

I really love the graphics too, very cartoonish in a good way, it also has a native mac port and it does run very we'll in cider with little config (I bought pc version before mac version was announced).

The game can also be played in co-op

Just like games like Left 4 dead 2, Gears of War 3 and portal 2. the game is meant to be played Co-op. you can play it offline, but how nice is it to search for 250.000 guns with 4 people :D

here is a vid of the new borderlands 2, it is also the only vid

Borderlands 2 looks awesome!
I like they still have the crazy sense of humor still in it.

I'm definitely gonna buy it.

On another note, I did finish Vampire Masquerade Bloodlines last night!
Very good game, much longer than I anticipated, I thought it was a 20 hrs game, but it is more like 40+ (at least for me, I like to finish all quests etc).

I must admit that the first parts of the game is the best, for me, it was a bit too much figthing on the end and a few quests was too hard:
SPOILER ALERT, very much spoilers inside here:

Skyrim looks better than Oblivion for sure, and they claim 3rd person is viable to play (which it wasn't really in Oblivion).
I like 3rd person much better, it just feels more right when you swing an axe.
I guess I'm gonna hold on a bit after release to see what people are saying about it, I've jumped the gun before on games that looked great but ended up as money wasted (Arcania-Gothic 4, payed $49 at release day..).

I still haven't started on The Witcher 2 (except playing the intro), and I still have the two last campaigns on NWN2 left too, so I have no hurry to get a new game. I also guess I should play Spellforce 2 and Planescape Torment too and ToEE.. So many games, so little time.  I maybe have time for 10-12 hrs of gaming a week, that leaves me 2-3 weeks pr game, so maybe Skyrim around xmas :D

System reqs aren't that bad, but I guess it will need a very new mac to run great, unless you have a hack:
Spoiler

Supported Graphics Cards:
Minimum – 8800 GT
Recommanded – Geforce GTX 460/Radeon 5850

Where as CPU reqs are easy to meet, minimum GF8800GT is pretty harsh for mac users, leaving MacBooks before 2010 out of the question (8800GT is twice as fast as 9600mGT), the GT330m in 2010 MBPs are a bit slower than GF8800GT, but should work i guess. And iMacs (late 09 early 10) with 4670 should just manage it, I guess. 2010 iMacs should run it.

As for meeting recommended specs, you'll need a top end iMac with 6970m (which is very close to desktop 5850) or a Mac Pro with 5870 or GTX 285. Maybe even the 4870 MacPros could pull it off to, 4870 isn't that much behind the 5850.

Luckily I meet the reqs pretty fine and since I'm only gonna play in 1680x1050 It should manage it with every bells and whistles on! The reqs are slightly higher than The WItcher 2, which runs amazing.

I'm not sure there's any RPG better than Planescape: Torment, although I thought Arcanum was a fantastic and underappreciated title as well. Love love love basically any isometric RPGs. Right now I'm working my way through BG2 for something like the 8th time - these games never get old.

Was anyone else way into those SSI gold box games back in the day? I still play them occasionally.

I must admit that gold box titles went right past me. I didn't have access to any of them while I was younger and it require some effort to go back and play really old games, if you don't have any relation to the game from before.

Finished Original Campaign in Neverwinter Nights 2 yesterday!

I loved the game a lot, it's very true to the DnD rules and the story was very solid.
The game isn't without flaws tho, the camera controls was horrible, but after tweaking the ini files manually it was ok.
Why the in game camera tweaks was so l bad I don't know, even at lowest sensitivity it was too fast when moving with mouse.

The games AI is not great either, your companions do pretty much as they like, and not what you told them 5 secs ago.
This could often get casters go and die or blow up something they shouldn't do.
For boss battles I turned off all AI and did some serious micro management. It requires you to pause game every 5-10 secs to give your chars new commands. This made some boss fights take nearly an hour, especially when you have upto 10 chars to control at the end. There are also some problems with the game which might make you have to reload an older save, like when a boss aggro something in the environment instead of going for you and makes him impossible to reach. This has nothing to do with the mac port as I found several threads on different forums about people complaining about the same. Just consider youself warned and always save before encounters.

Don't get me wrong, the game is amazing, even with some flaws. If the game didn't have the issues I've mentioned it would be a good 9.5/10 for me, but it's still a game that deserved a solid 9. For those of you that liked games like Dragon Age Origins, I guess you'll like this one too, just know that the graphics here aren't as good, and the RPG elements is way more hardcore. Like lvling up a character in NWN2 there are so many options to choose among.
I also love that when you hit someone you'll see all the rolls, and not only some numbers above the enemies head.
If I should compare NWN2 to DA:O I guess i maybe enjoyed DA:O a bit more, mostly because the game was "less annoying", with better AI, better camera controls, and less bugs. If NWN2 was a polished as DA:O, I would have chosen NWN2, just because the DnD world just is so much more than DA:O and it's much more like a true RPG; and also bosses are just so much harder in NWN2 (my opinion).

I guess I used somewhere between 60-70 hours to finish it, but then again I'm pretty slow, I'm sure less patient players could go thru it in half the time.

I still have two campaigns left, Mask of the Betrayer and Storm of Zephir, but I guess i'm gonna wait a bit with those for now, and maybe play The Witcher 2 first.

Here's a picture of my NWN2 party:

First post.
I think as I'm learning the ropes and have only just discovered Wineskin, even attempting to port Skyrim would be madness. But it will be going on my XP partition.

Morrowind was far superior to Oblivion, which is why I've registered - must get my old copy up and running again. Probably the game that brought me back to RPGs after years of wilderness (fun wilderness, mind, with Civ and Rollercoaster Tycoon 2!)
