I (and many other members) are getting frustrated with the swear filter. (Why is craap in there?! It's not even a swear!)

So here's my two ideas.
1. Have an option to disable the bad word filter in the settings (but leave it on by default for new members)
2. Have an 18+/adult section (the name makes you think bad things but there wouldn't be any of that) where users can say whatever they want. This would also be a spam section as well cause there wouldn't really be any good to come out of it. Leave a warning at the top that says "IN THIS SECTION THERE'S NO SWEAR FILTER, AND USERS CAN POST WHATEVER THEY WANT. BROWSE AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION." With this plan, the swear filter would be left on in other sections.

I think cr*p and sh*t must be removed front he filter.
They are used by many in daily basis and when cr*p gets translated to good and Sh*t to nice, we get many confusing posts-

Most filters change how things are stored, not displayed... its not a simple matter of turning it off and on, because it would be stored with the replaced word.  I agree the word change outs can make confusing posts though, but I think that was on purpose so people would stop being vulgar.

No matter what words people decide to use on a daily basis, sh*t and cr*p are still vulgar though.

true. if I went up to someone here I'd never met IRL, and just started swearing, they'd be like, "WTF?"

I also think Fuc* shouldn't be in the swear filter somehow. for me it's the same like nice XD I use fuc* even more than nice, for example in what the fuc* or fun* are you serious? XD

At first I thought they'd put up a star for the word f*ck. But this is just plain awful, and I think we should disable to whole thing anyway. This website contains wrappers for GTA IV, where you can have sex, and see stripers shaking their butts. Or you can play Prototype, where you see blood flowing all over the walls, people screaming, and organs hanging from the roofs. And you are adding language filters that change the word sh!t to nice? Silly.

It works fine for me more or less, though.
(That's cause I don't swear much on this forum except for assw**e, since that gives me platypus :D)

Basic words like the cr*p and sh*t should have the filter removed, I agree with cluthz, but if the filter still has to stay on and the OP or others want to avoid confusion they could use the asterisks like we're doing now, I guess.

just do what steam does, put a bunch of heart symbols to replace each letter in the curse word, it seems to work for them

or better yet, instead of stopping everyone from using curse words like some kind of communist dictatorship, just discipline your kids better... thats the real problem here anyway, kids that can't control themselves

Could we replace cursewords with silly sounding words that have the same meaning? Like instead of c**p becoming "nice" it would become "poop", that way the sentence keeps its meaning and the bad word is gone. So instead "This game is a pile of nice" we get "this game is a pile of poop"

That's the best idea, at least in theory. The question is how to execute it?
Games I own that still need porting:

You know people use swearing all the time. It depends on how you use it. If you are swearing towards someone then you have a serious problem and need to solve it before it kills you. Or you can swear towards good things. like that is (Example: Now that fu*k funny man) not (Example: Go fuc* yourself) that an insault.

(Not a matter of like or dislike form this line)
------------------------------------------------------
Here my optinion/option. If anybody swearings it doesn't matter who you are or what age you are, you get banned plan and simple. If no one can't act their own age and want to be like my cousin always say a dush bag then by all means go somewhere and be a dushbag not here. We are respectful one another and we would like to keep it that way. that my opinion/option.

There are some funny things happening around the forum since the filter.
In top of my head i remember:

"The graphics card in a xbox is good compared to modern desktop graphics cards"

"I updated the application, but it didn't do nice."

"When you buy a new PC you got all sorts of nice applications and demoes installed, you'll have to use the first few hours to clean it or reinstall it before it's usable"

I hate swearing filters. Let us say what we want. Sure it can be abused, but I haven't seen any of that here. Usually swear words are just used to express a strong feeling.

Besides, as Tim Minchin points out, at this point in time the word "F**k" (F Asterisk Asterisk K) is in such common usage that it almost means fuc.k more than fuc.k means fuc.k.

These examples are quite... amusing.

I guess the swear filter list indeed needs some tweaks to avoid those...

As for removing the filter altogether, I'm somewhat against it. Many people tend to use a really coarse language, even if they don't do it on purpose, or don't even realize it.

Yah, please don't remove it, i dislike reading comments filled with f*ck and s*ht. However transforming cr*p to nice and so on isn't a good idea either because the sense of the sentence may be lost in the process.

Im more with Doh's idea of changing all bad word to symbols %&#^ that way the sense is preserved and the censorship is applied.

The sear filter doesn't change output, it changes input.  No one knows what the person said, as its not stored in the database, the swear filter changed the information as it was entered... anything changed right now cannot be undone.

Ok instead of removing it, Would it be possible if you let the users have the option to change the filters (On and/or Off).

Example: Users have the option to change what ever they see fit aswell as having the option to turn on and or off.

I know this might sound alittle to much but I don't like the words nice or justin beber, How the heck you spell his name. I want the option to have my own saying instead of those only I can see it no one else.

Just a thought.
