Hey,
Once I'm logged in to PortingTeam.com, I find the Shoutbox new message alerts (ie. the little number that appears in a red box next to Shoutbox in the tabs) very inconsistent.  Assuming I'm starting on the Shoutbox tab, here's what I see:
1) At the moment, the last shout was 6:28pm.  There's a little "1" next to the Shoutbox tab.
2) If I click on any other tab (the ones in the webpage, not a browser tab), i find that the number will do one of the following:
disappear (which makes sense - I've read all the current shouts)
stay (which doesn't really make sense - there are no new messages)
increase (this makes less sense - I've seen it go to a "2" frequently)
3) The number will switch between any of the options in (2) every time I click on a new tab

I've tried this on Safari 5.1.7 and Chrome 19 Stable.  OS X 10.7.4.

Am I the only one getting this?

System do count online members number on shoutbox, not count message number.

Edit: It can count guests and anonymous users number too.

I think its the number of people that are watching the shoutbox not the number of new updates

Aha!!!!  That explains it :)  And I didn't see the other thread when I did a search cos I searched for Shoutbox not "shout box".

Just so I know I'm not as blind as mr magoo, where does it explain the purpose of the Shoutbox alert numbers?

Reboot already posted the link... It's the #2 post in this thread.

Also, if you're on the Forums tab then the Shoutbox will still keep you in the number displayed on the Shoutbox tab, since there is a small shoutbox in the bottom of the Forums page.
