Okay so I had an external hard drive called the LaCie D2 Quadra or something similar. Basically, it stoop connecting to the computer so my dad assumed the hard drive inside was fried. I threw it in an old mac desktop to check and the hard drive worked. Now that both my macbook without the broken display is fried, and the other has a broken display, I'm trying to rig a macbook from the parts I have. I need to put the 2010 mobo, battery, and maybe hard drive in the 2011 macbook pro chassis with the working (or so I think) display.

Since the External hard drive was taken apart, I connected it to a 2011 iMac via firewire 400/800 to see if the hard drives from the macbook pro's were still operational. The iMac doesn't recognize the hard drive, and the external hard drive has never been used with this computer before. Do i need a special software I'm not finding, could the hard drive bay not work, or could it be because my hard drives have an OS on it?

Thanks to anyone that gives actual help.

have you tried re-formatting the hard drive on windows or through disk utility?

edit: the disk should still be visible in disk utility even though the hard drive may not appear in your Finder. If thats the case, the hard drive may simply need to be reformatted OR you could try leaving it plugged in for a while, just in-case it takes a while for your hard drive to load up on Mac OSX. (Sometimes hard drives take a minute or two to load up).

The La Cie Quadras does not need software to work. The SATA->Firewire bridge is probably dead (this is ofte called oxford bridge).

You can get a cheap SATA->USB adapter to test your drive ( http://www.newegg.co...N82E16812232002 ),
I think just about any computer store will carry this, and it shoudn't cost much.
I've made one myself from an external Western Digital HD I salvaged a few years ago. It should not need any drivers.

As for your Macbook project.
I'm pretty sure that the macbook motherboard won't fit in the MBP enclosure, unless it's an aluminum MacBook and a 13" MBP.
I think the white macbooks have a different motherboard layout than the MBPs.
However, you might be able to replace the panel, although this can be a bit tricky.

Anyways, good luck on your project, and have you ever considered getting insurrance, seems like you're pro at breaking stuff :P

I always buy insurance but it never covers the obvious poop that will happen, only problems that are tech related. I wish that apple would start selling AppleCare+ for computers (covers accidental damage 2 times I think) like they do for iPhones. Anyway, they were both 15" MacBook pros and the parts did fit, but as I was replacing the keyboard, I think a display wire got semi-stripped since the display stays black and the computer won't boot (it would before)
