Submitting new Ports in the Port Database

Posted by devilhunter on Jan 15 2012 03:12 PM
Submitting new Ports to the Port Database is actually very easy.
The Port Database is designed to let even new Users with no experience submit new Ports.

However, please read this topic before submitting a new Port, because we want to give you an info how to format Port Topics correctly so they can help others and not confuse them.

If you want to look at a Port that was posted via this template, look at an example here.
Note that the Info below is the minimum for a Port and it's required on all Ports.
If you get creative or if you would simply like to add more to a Port's description, feel free to do so.
Ports with lots of additional Info can look like this

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Description Template for experienced Users:

For everyone who already knows how to submit Ports, here is the template for the Description field: (click the spoiler to see the template)
(just copy & paste this into your Description field and edit the pre-defined info for your Port)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note: The 'Lorem Ipsum...' is a dummy text, meant to be replaced for your Port!

How-to for new Users:

Step 0 (submitting a Port)
Posted Image
- click the 'Submit new Port' Button and choose a category where the Port fits best into (Action, RPG, Office Use, Multimedia, etc.)

Posted Image
Step 1 (linking to a File Download)
- upload the Wrapper to a File Hosting Site (ex. Megaupload, MediaFire, FileSonic...) and use Linksave to protect that Download Link.
- click the 'Link to Files' button on the Submit template in the Port Database copy Linksave's protected Download Link into the field above the 'Link to Files' Button

(click the spoiler to see the example)

Step 2 (add a cover/boxart + some screenshots)
- here you can add some screenshots & a (game) cover. every picture has to be under 180KB, so .jpeg files are recommended.
- after uploading the screenshots and the (game) cover, click on the cover icon to mark it as the main picture.
(the main picture should always be the cover!)

(click the spoiler to see the example)

Step 3 (add name + description + requirenments + bug notes + installation instructions)
- enter the Name of the Port into the 'Port Name' field
- (optional) if you updated your Port, enter your version number and version history into the 'Port Version' & 'Change Log' fields

- copy this text from the template below (click the spoiler) into the 'Description' field & edit it to the info for your Port

Notes:
- the text above the 'Personal Notes' string should be used for the Port's Description. For example; get a short game desciption from Wikipedia, Gamespot or other places.
- the text below the 'Personal Notes' string should be used for your Info about this Port. For example; what Game Version you used (non-steam), or how well the Port runs on your mac, or what you would like to say to everyone using your Port.
- fill out the system specs of your mac where you are running this Port in the OS, Ram & Video fields of the 'My System Specs', and the total Disk Space your finished Port uses.
- list all Issues the Port has under the 'Known Issues' string. Graphics Issues, low Frames/second, gameplay issues. everything that you consider not normal compared with the native Windows version.
- how did you install the Game/app into the Wrapper? list the detailed way for others under the 'Installation' string.
This step is important, or else others will not know how to install their Game/app into your Wrapper.
For example:

Quote

Install the game using the built-in Wineskin Installer located in Wrapper.app *right-click and choose show package contents* ->Wineskin.app.
After install, use a no-cd fix from here ( link ), and replace the old files from /Contents/drive_c/Program Files/....

Step 4 (Wrapper Type & Graphic Card compatibility)
The fields below are pretty self explanatory. Fill out the Infos: what Wrapper Type you used, what Wine Engine that Wrapper has, and how well it works on your mac's Video Card(s)

(click the spoiler to see the example)
Spoiler

& Submit

That's it.

NOTES:
- use 'My System Specs' instead of 'Recommended System Specs' in the Port's description.
This will show users how the port works on actual hardware and not on some thought out requirements.

- pictures can also be linked to in the description field if you do not want to upload them to our server.
use the thumbnail code in the description field to link to external pictures.
[thumbnail]http://www.linktopicture.com/picture.png[/thumbnail]
These external picture links can often go down, though, pics uploaded to our server via the normal 'attach file' (upload pictures) button will stay around forever.

Here is a plain code version of the template, I use it with Typinator, saves me the copy-pasting

(I added a few minor things though)

On an unrelated note, you said full DOS games are OK, because they are abandonware, but there are still DOS games on sale at GoG. Souldn't there be a rule to only upload full DOS games if they cannot be bought anymore?
Also, is there any reason to use the DOS wrapper instead of Boxer? Boxer gameboxes do not include DOSBox so I guess they are smaller in size.

They are mostly abandonware, not all (changed my wording above), you're right.
If there should be any trouble down the road later, we may have to introduce a blacklist of games that cannot be posted here due to the owner's request.

Still, 99% of this stuff is abandonware, and these games are very hard to find sometimes. We'll do our part on keeping this stuff alive as long as we can, would be a shame to let them die.

I have had trouble uploading a port because I always get a One of the fields you completed had more data than is allowed. error.
What did I do wrong?
