Steamliner
Wrapper for playing a wide number of Windows Steam games on OS X

(See the project page for development discussion.)

Personal Notes
I own a desktop Windows box in addition to all my Apple hardware, and being away from home this summer I’ve wanted to play many of my Windows games on my MacBook. We have all these wrappers for different Windows games — and it’s great — but seeing how many of the games I’m playing are on Steam, it seems silly to have a wrapper for each game, especially when each wrapper eats up valuable space on my hard drive.

The goal with Steamliner is to create one lightweight Wineskin wrapper which supports a wide number of Windows games in Steam with only the libraries needed installed.

Libraries Installed
Currently, in addition to Steam, the following libraries are included:
  • DirectX 9
  • msxml3
  • .NET Framework 4.0
  • XNA Framework Redistributable 4.0
  • Wine Gecko
Games Supported
  • Aquaria
  • Awesomenauts
  • Blood Bowl (series)
  • Conquest of Elysium 3
  • Crusader Kings (Complete)
  • Deus Ex (GOTY)
  • Disciple II (series)
  • Divine Divinity
  • The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Greed Corp
  • Mount & Blade (series)
  • One Way Tactics
  • Receiver
  • Spelunky (HD)
  • Terraria
What You Can Do
We need to document which Windows games work and any specific settings required with them.
Tell us in the forum. Right now I’d like to focus on Windows-only games (as we can already play the Mac versions natively) but even so, anything that works can be documented. (If additional libraries are needed for a particular Windows game to work, list them too.)

My System Specs
  • OS: Mac OS X 10.9.4
  • CPU: 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7
  • RAM: 8 GB RAM
  • Video:    Intel HD Graphics 4000
  • Disk Space:   1.18 GB used
(Obviously Steamliner should work with most other configurations.)

Known Issues
  • Steam Web Helper occasionally crashes on startup.
  • Steam overlay is disabled as it isn’t compatible with Wineskin out-of-the-box.
  • Some games on launch may get the false positive error “unable to find a version of the runtime to run this application” but otherwise run fine.
  • Blood Bowl series of games:
    • The video for the initial cinematic is black and cannot be seen, and the game cannot be played until after the cinematic is finished. Waiting it out seems to work fine. There’s also a checkbox in Settings for the intro cinematic — make sure it’s turned off.
  • Deus Ex (GOTY)
    • 3D renderer causes video glitches. Use the software renderer only.
  • Divine Divinity
    • 3D renderer causes video glitches. Use the software renderer only.
  • Mount & Blade series
    • When resolution is set to “Use Desktop Resolution” this may make the dock and menu bar visible. Choose a set resolution.
  • One Way Tactics
    • Software renderer gives only a black screen. Use 3D renderer only.
    • Some music doesn’t play.
    • Has trouble re-launching after game has quit.
Known Incompatible Games
  • Confrontation (no audio)
  • Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes (unplayable)
Installation
Drag the application to your Applications folder.

Wow!  This is awesome!  Thanks for making a port that works with many different games.  You may want to add that it works for the game Torchlight 2, and I am in the process of installing other games to it to see how they react.  I will comment again when I get more games working and post my findings.  Great job and keep up the good work!
u sir, are amazing. I cant thank you enough for making this. I can now play terraria and torchlight 2. Keep up the awesome work ;)
great work on this! how does setting up controller support work? ordinarily I copy in the xbox360cemu .dlls to the directory of a game's .exe, but here there is the Steam.exe as well as any individual games.
Sorry for being a stupid, but how do you run it?

E: Nevermind, I got it running.

Edit 2: Terraria threw an error when running it. Hwhat? http://imgur.com/Jz69jAT

I think I have a fix for this. I’m working on a new version. In the meantime, try changing the version of Windows in the wrapper to something newer.

That’s a good question. Not sure, but if someone wants to help me with it, I won’t mind!
I've been playing Final Fantasy VII with the Skyrim wrapper. It works okay but runs noticeably slower than it should. I'll try it with this instead and keep my fingers crossed for better performance. Awesome with Morrowind support as well!

In Terraria, I'm getting the same same error as the one above. How do you change the version of Windows in the wrapper?

Edit: Crash happens upon character creation. I tried downloading a character off the internet and manually putting it in the folder but the selection appeared blank.
Hold option at app launch, choose Options (or similarly titled), and then there are two different ways to change this.

* Click “winecfg” or “Wine Config” and there should be a tab that lets you change the Windows version.

OR

* Click “Winetricks” and look for a command to change the version of Windows.
Ok! I tried every combination from 8 to XP. 8, 2008 R2 and Vista all produced the same crash upon character creation as the original(windows 7) Windows 2003 and XP allowed me to create a character and world, but things got extremely glitchy when loaded, making the game pretty much unplayable. I stopped at Windows XP because that is the game's minimum required OS.
That is worrisome.

I'm talking with Keyaku with getting a new version, but if you want to hop on IRC (channel #steamliner on Freenode) I can tell you how to start a new wrapper in the meantime.
awesome wrapper, thank you!
my experiences so far:
• Overlord works perfectly (a bit laggy sometimes, but I have a MacBook from 2008, so thats ok)
• Starbound tries to install DirectX upon first opening it, then it crashes
• Don't starve together just opens a window and immediately closes it again
• Binding of Isaac: Rebirth seems to actually run but the graphics are totally messed up (the cutscene and most textures don't show up)
Will post more results on other games once I got the time to try them.

UPDATE 1: Many games want to install DirectX upon first starting it but they all fail. Is it safe to install any DirectX with winetricks like d3dx9_36 or might this mess up the whole wrapper?

UPDATE 2:
•Mirrors Edge works (although not on my computer, too old)
•Monaca works (as far as I tested it)
•Antichamber does not work (tries to install DirectX which is aborted with this error message: "dxsetup.exe - .NET Framework: Unable to find a version of the runtime to run this application"
•Reus tries to install Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0.cmd which fails. error message: "This app failed o start because it could not find or laud the Qt platform plugin "windows"."
Bioshock works, but I can't see 360 degrees. It just cuts off, maybe it was supposed to be so originally. Not so sure. On a separate note, when will streamliner be updated? I get a lot of error messages.

Edit: I used winetricks to set "WMO=force." Now I can turn 360 without worrying. Game works perfectly fine, besides the occasional crash.
Fallout New Vegas seems to work alright. My computer has always had crashing issues with it, but it runs.
I keep getting this pretty thing, nothing browser related works.
