#86637 Port Database Nexus: Discussion Topic

why doesn't the forums/database just use Google custom search instead . Like i am pretty sure there is a plugin that allows you to integrate that into the site .
The current search engine is horrible . There have been many situations where people have ported games that already have been ported because the search engine failed to display the game they seeked :P
Examples of games that can't be found via the search?

What sometimes people do is while in the forums, they search for a game, and then only the topics for that game show up, no ports.
You have go go over to the PDB and search there for the game to find it, or click the button in the search field to pick the place you want to search, forums, tutorials, port database.
Getting all results from all modules mixed together would be less than optimal, google' search would be far worse. (plus google can't index everything here, as some things are permission based.)
Only sites that have no search or a very primitive implementation use google search.

#86624 adding 10.8 into the wrapper type info section

Posted by devilhunter on 25 July 2012 - 12:13 AM in Suggestion Box

The check mark indicators are just a quick rough description anyway.
There's no way to group compatibility, even alone for Cider for example. Half of the ciders now require 10.6 upwards, and some are 10.7 only.
Since most of the Wineskin Ports are made with 2.5.4 and below, in a half a year or so when more 2.5.5+ Ports are around, this can be changed to 'no' on 10.5 then.

Yes that, may I know why do we have those limits?
this was talked about last time in detail.
fewer characters means:
more words to index
more strain on the site/database
slower site/search results
less specific search results

This is why the search results on most systems ignore or don't like input of words with less than 3 or 4 characters.
indexing ' i ' or ' a ' or ' of ' or ' the'  leads to search results that aren't even related to things you searched for.
It would be great to tell the system to just ignore words with less than 4 characters so that you don't get the 'too few characters' error message, but the system does not have that.
I already lowered the character amount last time this was discussed from 4 to 3 minimum characters, and the amount of (useless) indexed words has gone up immensely.

We already have a search bar, but the limitations make it impossible to search for something.
and what limitations would that be, the 3 character min limit for words?
just don't use 'of' or 'to' in the search.

#86619 adding 10.8 into the wrapper type info section

With the new big cat coming out tomorrow, i've changed the template.
Dropped 10.4, added 10.8.

@doh, should i put a 'no' instead of a 'yes' for Wineskin on 10.5?

#86328 Google Account Sign Up / Log In

Posted by devilhunter on 16 July 2012 - 05:11 PM in Announcements

You can now sign up or log in through a Google Account on our website.
It's a feature we've always wanted to have on this Board, to let users sign up without the captcha/activation email hassle.

This is mainly useful to People who have not signed up already; so if you already have an account here, there's not much new besides one less password for you to remember.

Creating a new account here through Google works like this:

- There are three ways to sign in/sign up: (pick whatever you prefer, all buttons perform the same function)
click the Google Icon Posted Image on the top right corner
OR
click the "Sign In" Button right next to it then the "Posted Image Use Google" Button
OR
click the green "Create Account" Button then the "Posted Image Sign in with Google" Button.

After you click the Posted Image Button it takes you to Google's Page where you type in your @gmail or @googlemail email and your email Password.
Then Google redirects you back to us and you can choose what display name you'd like here.
And that's it.

The Google Sign up method uses official Google APIs and is very secure.
People who sign up with Facebook or Twitter use the same procedure.
The Google login is much faster though, creating an account is as quick as you'd need to type in your email address and a display name.

Note:
You need to have a Google email address or another Google Account (Labs, Code, etc) to use the Google login feature.
If you already made an account normally here, and associated a @gmail email address with it, you can use the Google login method too.

If you only used the Google Sign in feature to log in here, you do not have a normal Forum password made for your account here.
The Button "Password" shows up besides the Sign Out Button to let you choose a password, so you can also log in with your username and password here (and not depend on Google's services)

#86325 HTML Emails

Posted by devilhunter on 16 July 2012 - 04:30 PM in Report website problems

Since the last Board update, the HTML emails are working again now. (they were broken before)

The emails you get now should look more fancy then the 'txt like' emails you've got up to now.

HMTL Emails were enabled across the Board, including:
- registration
- activation
- daily/weekly/monthly digests
- lost password
- email renewal
- comment added
- friend added
- status changed
- PM's recieved
- Ports broken
- topic/forum/Ports subscriptions
- warnings received
and lots of others.

Let me know if something looks out of place.

#85436 Swear Filter Suggestions

There's no need for insults or personal attacks.

Funny.
A personal insult is if i call you names, or another statement which tells you to stfu or gtfo for example.
which i'm not doing, ever.

The thing is that most of the reports that came in the last few months pointed back at you (or at blinx for that matter), this is not an insult, it's a fact.
Often about blinxfrost's ports, or hmtinc's posts, or even just at random stuff, to name a few.

I can't keep warning you all the time, or other people for such a simple matter; or get in touch with the people who have to report this. That's why the swear filter.
It's an easy solution for a problem where you'd normally have to bonk someone over the head, which i'm not a fan of.
and sh*t and cr*p were the most popular words used in the 'offending' posts.
yes, you were one of the primary reasons why i enabled the swear filter if you don't know by now; while you have a big mouth sometimes, i still think you're a good kid and belong to this bunch.
And i want to keep you around and not shoo you away with the 'behaviour points' that the reports force me to, for something as simple as a swear.

Astounding how such a simple thing as a swear filter gets people to ruffle their feathers, as if it's taking away your personal freedom.
It's simply a protection to not let thigns escalate when people call each other names, and to let the mods distribute less warning points/temp. bans.
Everybody wins, or not?

If you want to say that PS3 / XBOX (for example) is a bloddy haggis compared to the PC, please choose your words more carefully. (but the community guidelines give us the privilege to add new words into the censor filter, when we see fit)
If you choose cr*p or sh*t in your sentence, the swear filter will let you know that it's wrong to curse, especially because more than 90% of the people here are minors.

If the current replacements for sh*t and cr*p are too confusing, we can find alternatives for them.
(Ned Flanders like anyone? diddely-daddely...)

Good question. I'm not personally bothered by those two words, so I'm fine with removing them.

These two words are the most used here (and by specific persons).
It's quite nice to see multiple reports by people because they often see things like "did you post a shit port again" or "stop posting your crap projects" in the forum.
And 'crap' and 'shit' can be very offending depending on the situation.
KGL (topic starter) is the main offender in these things, and basically because of things like this i enabled the word filter in the first place. Not surprising he's the one that gets annoyed by the system's ability to educate him or help think about the stuff he just posted.

Since some XBOX Live level kids are here that think they can swear all they want at random people, the swear filter helps the mods out by giving them less work.
Basically i don't want to run around after trash talking kids who curse all the time, handing out punishments and justifying the situations, and these things tend to trigger reports most of the time.
On most civilised places it's raining bans over things like this, here it's just the simple word filter.
(that also gives others the option to laugh at the vulgar person because of the twisted words. )

platypus.

#84971 Tutorial Requests Section

Posted by devilhunter on 22 June 2012 - 01:37 PM in Suggestion Box

A great number of new people here don't know even the basic stuff, like uploading a Wrapper somewhere or splitting it in segments.
Or what to do with a .7z or .dmg file once they downloaded them. Or uploading a picture somewhere and not hotlinking it from another site.

Can a little 'Tutorial Requests' section be useful to give us an idea what these people are missing?

But, since i know that almost none of you guys ever bother to write tutorials here; be it reasons of 'not my problem' or 'i thought everybody knew this',  i don't know if tutorial requests that are posted there will actually find a Tutorial in the Tutorial Tab above....

Opinions please.

The main problem is 10.7 - I just disagree with that - considering they are dos games.

But to each their own.
agree with that.
You take an app that can work even in 10.3 on a PPC and wrap it in a Intel Lion only launcher.

The base Launcher that even i can build with a titleless windows and special window effects (see cxex) even work on 10.4.

#84969 Gatekeeper and signing software...

Posted by devilhunter on 22 June 2012 - 01:26 PM in General

I actually found a very easy workaround for this issue more than 1.5 years ago, when i made Central compatible with Lion.
Lion's "this app was downloaded from xyz, are you sure you want to open?" got upgraded into gatekeeper in ML, so i think my workaround should still work.
doh, have you got a Mountain Lion installation to test an app fro me if it throws up a gatekeeper warning if i send it to you?

And on another note, Basically every Wineskin Port orginates from the stock Wineskin Wrapper.
Can't you code sign the stock Wineskin Wrapper and all other created Wrappers from Winery all have the same Code Signing?
It would be sign just one app once, work everywhere.
Now this throws up the issue what code signing actually does.
I think it just looks if the mac executables have been tampered with, and ignores the rest of the additional resources in /Resources/drive_c, or am i wrong?
Basically that's a Wrapper. Base code which code signing checks does not get modified, but only additional resources in the app, which code signing is not made to check for.

#84157 The New MacBook Pro!

Posted by devilhunter on 12 June 2012 - 07:44 PM in News

Just curious, did anyone gather what exactly gets upscaled?

Does the 'retina' macbook upscale things that are too small?
The resolution is just too big for normal apps, and i suspect even some new games will get issues with the resolution.
The system needs to upscale thigns quite a bit, and there is a limit how low high res screens can switch to, like 800x600 or 1024x768 mode.
Might be not possible with the  new displays.

edit:
ah forget it, found a bit of info on this

#84156 Shout Box Help

Indeed.
You need two or more Posts in the Forum to use the Shoutbox.

This restriction was implemented a good while ago to stop the "Beg Box" issue, where new people just posted various requests for download links/port requests, and other verbal diarrhea that made no sense what they actually wanted like "cxz" or "call of duty"

Wineskin 2.5.5+ will not work on 10.5, they are 10.6+ only.  This is not because of the engine, its everything in the frameworks folder and WineskinX11 built for 10.6.

I had my problems building for 10.5 without the 10.5 SDK. However does it make any sense to build a Leopard app for Wrappers, that are using 10.6+ only engines ???
I guess dev can drop Leopard support at all.
There are still WS8 Engines that people can work with. There will be small button that links to a page where people can download the 'obsolete' WS8 Engines and the WS 2.5.4 Wrapper, specially for those who are stuck on 10.5

Updated Ports ALSO shows New Ports, however.
Technically, no.

The updated ports nexus shows 'new' ports also when the submitter clicks the edit button and saves again on those new ports.

So you submit something and leave that port alone, it won't show up on the updated nexus.
But once you click edit and resubmit, regardless of how much time passes since the submit (can be 1 second), that port will also show up on the updated nexus.

Design flaw of the feed system...
Perhaps we can take this out in a modification of the updated ports feed later.

Btw, we also see the users who spam re-edits for exploiting that design flaw :P

#83453 Bumping and Tiering

Posted by devilhunter on 02 June 2012 - 12:02 PM in Suggestion Box

1. Click the 'Updated Ports' Nexus Tab found in the Port Database.
Only new Ports should pop up in the 'what's new' sidebar and the PDB slider.

2. like this? I'd love to have that, and i've even set up a clone of the WineHQ database here at some point, but the system they use is absolute crap. Not to mention it looks horrible and lacks just about everything.
Sadly the downloads module is not made for this view, others should post their Wrapper/Port as a new entry if they think it's better, even if the game already exists with that Wrapper type. (As we do already now)

And that agreement would be...?

From reading through this thread, people don't seem to agree on anything really.
Testing Ports for something like this is not really possible; and achievements can't really be implemented fairly, even if we let the system decide who gets what when.

the error is when you create a wrapper , The utility doesn't launch any wine config and just skips to the wrapper creation complete message . When i click show in finder, There is nothing  there why .
Is it just my copy or is it a problem in the code ?
working fine here.
i'd need additional confirmations for this error if something is wrong.

#83330 Forum Suggestions

Could you bring back advanced porter too?
In a word? No.
Who should get a 'Advanced Porter' Rank, and who doesn't? What are the criteria?
Last time we gave these out for 'x number of ports', but not this time anymore. Lots of crappy ports? Lots of faked downloads? Time to check his Ports before he gets that title?
Nah, can't do that.
We've set it up so that the system distributes the Porter Badge & the My Nexus Page when you submit something, and we can do nothing more in that direction, based on bad criteria that all have serious flaws.
And last time these had to be distributed by hand from me, and i had the pleasure of getting nice Messages about why he won't get one, or why xyz got one and his ports were crap.
No thanks. I choose to let the system do the talking now.

Two thing you can do. Get 500 Posts in the forum, then set your title to what you want it.
Or polish you Ports and get your Nexus Page out to people.

Quote

could we add a 'Latest Articles' section like the two above? It might help the Front Page's popularity. If you can't do it, I understand, but it'd be nice to have. :)
Would be an idea to consider.
But, we do not have a forum alone.
We also have a Front Page, and the 'latest articles' sidebar is already there. (perhaps it needs spicing up a bit)
Something that shows people that they can write articles that are featured on our front page could be nice, something on the front page even.

Quote

Change 'Most Reviewed Ports' to 'Top Commented Ports' and 'Recently Added Tutorials' to 'Latest Tutorials'.
first idea does not sound good enough, last one seems to fit better.

Lion only interface problem for now, i'll think of something.
- the warning icons
these dialogues are scripted, and scripted dialogues usually do not have special icons at all, only the standard ones with the small warning sign.
with the scripted dialogues, i could display anything, even giving the app it's own matching icons everywhere.
of course, these icons were chosen to match CXEx' glossy icons, so on the Winesking stuff, they aren't fitting so well anymore.

Does 4.3 support building applications error-free for 10.5 Leopard? No.
