#16642 Announcing CrossOver 9.0.0, Beta 2

Posted by jimjimjimbob on 22 February 2010 - 06:08 PM in News

Beta 2 released:

CrossOver 9 beta 2 is now available for your testing pleasure. Thanks for all your great reports on beta 1 -- we immediately fixed several of the most critical bugs, and then took our time ironing out several less severe (but nonetheless troublesome) ones.

9.0 is pretty close to done.  We have a few more Internet Explorer bugs that we're hoping to iron out, and we're still interested in feedback about the application installer logic.

CrossOver 9.0.0beta2 - 2010/02/22

GUI-specific changes:
      - Fixed many serious problems with beta1 on OS X Tiger.
      - Fixed quite a few potential crashes in the Mac Software Installer.
      - Updated documentation to correspond to the new GUI.
      - Improved behavior of the Cancel buttons in the Software Installer.
      - Added an interface for creating RPM and Debian packages from bottles. (This was present in 8.x but not in 9.0.0beta1.)
      - Made many cosmetic changes.

App Installation logic changes:
     - Improved Software Installer logic quite a bit, especially regarding the selection of appropriate bottles.

Windows Application fixes:
      - Fixed a URL-mangling bug in Internet Explorer 6.
      - Fixed behavior of many websites in Internet Explorer 7.
      - Added several minor fixes for Quicktime Player bugs.
      - Added several Outlook fixes which should reduce the frequency of hangs and crashes.

#16577 [REQ] MSN messenger!

Posted by jimjimjimbob on 21 February 2010 - 10:38 PM in Application Requests

Let's reopen this topic:

I've got version 8.5 working under Wine and here's the wrapper (beta 3): (extract with BetterZip or something that'll decompress a 7Zip file - just the app, no other material as of yet.)

  http://www.multiupload.com/QB808CWMTD

Yes, it's only like build version 8.5 and the latest is 14 BUT the newest build refuses to work with Wine and there's a work around (that I'll keep quiet for now ;) ) for not using the most recent version.

What's wrong?
Getting either of 2 errors:

"Need to update"
or
"Can't connect"

Beta 2 is here and I'd love some people to share their experience. Apparently if I add these 2 lines to the 'hosts' file then the error'll go away:
65.54.239.80 messenger.hotmail.com
65.54.239.80 dp.msnmessenger.akadns.net

I'd LOVE some people to test it out and maybe fix this!

This'd be really useful so we don't have to visit the site just to see a 'semi-spam' comment that doesn't need replying to... esp. when at work!

#15310 Announcing CrossOver 9.0.0, Beta 2

Posted by jimjimjimbob on 05 February 2010 - 09:45 PM in News

Beta 1 Feb 5th 2010:

I'm happy to announce that we have just made CrossOver 9.0 beta 1, aka 'Snow Mallard', available for your testing pleasure. My apologies for the long delay; I had pressured Andrew into making the install wizard require fewer steps, but all those shortcuts kept leaving us feeling that something wasn't quite right. So I ended up demanding that the install wizard be completely redone, which delayed us by several weeks.  I'm lucky that I haven't been (justifiably) knifed by Andrew yet... :-) So, beta 1 features a new look for the Install Wizard. I'm curious to know what folks think of it, and whether it was worth the delay or not. Beta 1 also includes some fairly advanced features for customizing application installation; Aric is going to be posting some guidelines in the beta forums shortly.  If you're interested in learning more, look for that.

Changes in 9.0.0 Beta 1
CrossOver changes:
       - Bold new look!
       - Entirely redesigned application install process
       - Much faster bottle creation and manipulation times
       - Our application installation process is now guided by 'C4 Profiles'; XML files that should allow the process to be extended by anyone.

Application support improvements:
       - Some improvements in Internet Explorer, particularly IE7
       - Major improvements in Microsoft Office; notably Word clipart and Excel Macros should now work.  Outlook stability should continue to improve.
       - Limited support for Quicken 2010
       - Merged with Wine version 1.1.34 This represents a years work in Wine, 7578 patches in all, far too many to describe.

Remaining major tasks:
       - The online documentation is obsolete and wildly inaccurate
       - Ongoing refinements of the CrossOver installer's behavior
       - Ongoing work to improve the wisdome of our bottle-selection scheme

#14640 iPad - "The Future of Gaming"

Posted by jimjimjimbob on 27 January 2010 - 08:53 PM in Hardware

With the release of the iPad I stumbled across this article...

http://www.blogsdna....co-think-so.htm

The gaming portion of Apple’s highly anticipated product announcement event was, of course, kicked off by gaming industry heavy weights and long time iPhone and iPod Touch developer Electronic Arts. With their highly successful franchise Need For Speed acting as somewhat of a benchmark for the iPhone and Mac’s in the past, it was fitting that this is the game they would choose to show of the gaming potential of the newly announced Apple iPad.

Posted Image

The first thing we noticed in the demo is truly how much better Need For Speed looked on the iPad in comparison to the iPhone and iPod Touch. “It’s like holding an HD screen up to your face.” Perhaps the most noteworthy aspect of the demo when it comes to the design and power of the iPad is the fully touch enabled multi-touch experience that is obviously quite enhanced in comparison to the iPhone and iPod Touch. For example, tapping the car in Need For Speed will bring you inside of the vehicle, while swiping up or down on the shifter will allow you to change gears. The framerate has also been reported as being “smooth”, which is obviously always a good thing. The ability for a much richer multi-touch experience with the 9.7-inch iPad screen is obvious, however it’s yet to be seen exactly how developers will take advantage.

Macworld reported a statement made by president of EA Peter Moore, when asked about the iPad before its release he said, “If it’s got a great screen, some buttons, you can turn it on and it connects to the Internet, it’s got the ability to be a games machine.” This is an obvious an attempt to keep on good terms with Apple as Electronic Arts will definitely be spearheading development of games on the iPad and have certainly already begun the process.

Macworld also reported, “The centre of gravity in gaming is moving away from the console to these other devices,” Bart Decrem, chief executive officer of Tapulous insisted. “We’re going to wake up a year from now and see that this is a very important part of gaming.”

With so many developers definitely switching gears from developing games specifically for iPhone and iPod Touch to the iPad in the coming months, this is definitely good news for the highly anticipated Apple device and its ability to, possibly, change the game!

Have you tried doh's wineskin?

I tried to do TDU myself, but couldn't even get past the Key screen. (well that was with Cider sometime ago)

I'm having a go with RC6 now, I hope that it sorts the graphical issues out... I just love CXZ So much...

#14161 Test Drive Unlimited

Posted by jimjimjimbob on 23 January 2010 - 09:31 PM in Ask for Help (Game Ports)

Hey ya'll. Previously I've tried porting Test Drive Unlimited to Cider and CrossOver and did get thru but then realized there was a main flaw in the serial screen. I've tried reporting it to CXZ and that flaw is now passed but anther issue has arisen:

I've set: OffscreenRenderingMode to backbuffer to get the game to just launch, movie clips, sounds, menus and everything other than main game play is working fine!

The graphics are all screwed up. The video options look like you can have AntiAliasing but don't give me an option other than None and HDR is scrubbed out.

Main gameplay looks like this:
Fine:
Spoiler

Bad: (x3)
Spoiler

Any Ideas?

Awesome!

One issue: It screws up the links. "Spoiler" alone isn't enough, we need either URL tags around every link or a code box otherwise the link gets chopped to the viewer and we get the redirect url thing appearing. Is this an easy fix for any later things brought across? I'll go thru the ones done and change them if there's no easier way - you've done more than enough hard work!

#13587 Will the new Apple iSlate support high graphic gameplay?

Posted by jimjimjimbob on 15 January 2010 - 05:03 PM in Gaming

You've seen just how awesome the games for the iPhone are - some of the graphics that the games can pull off are amazing!  If they were to adapt an NVIDIA or ATI card that can run on a really small machine I don't see why they couldn't make this be just amazing. By the rumors it looks like it runs a near full version of OS 10 including loads of the amazing graphics for things like Exposé. To get this they'll need some darn good power - why not utilise that for the games?

I've tried this with the CD and downloaded versions and got no where. This was, however, before Games 8.1.3 so I'll have another try now!

As that topic's in the trash I'll have a go at porting it myself!

I've got the game working under CXZ - I'll upload the wrapper ASAP. I'll also try with Cider as I know it's been done before...  The graphics are pretty sweet and it runs well. The only issue I've got is autosaving the profile. Hopefully Cider'll sort this out.  - Jim You NOOOOB! Fixed :)

FYI - It's playing amazing on my 1920x1080 Monitor thru my Mac Mini with 256MB VRam!

A few users have asked for this, but as it's an older mod I dunno if it'd work on this version of the forum.

#12218 Covert CX wrappers into CXZ Wrappers requests

Posted by jimjimjimbob on 26 December 2009 - 12:36 PM in Suggestion Box

I've personally started porting a load of my old CrossOver Ports to CX ports and just totally wiped over the CrossOver ports so there's no longer any evidence of them over being CrossOver ports.

Only issue is knowing which ports people actually use and my limited amount of time and upload space for the CXZ Wrappers... If you know a wrapper's mine - just bang me a PM!
