I've ported Icewind Dale 2 with wineskin 2.5.1 and ws8wine1.3.17.
The game runs super well but there is one issue.
I can only launch it once and play, if i quit the app and relaunch it won't start.
It always start after reboot:
It is on my MacBook Air with Lion.

The X11 log is not finished.... there should be more... so somehow its dumping out unfinished with no error as to why....

does it only happen when that wrapper is set for the game.. or can you set it for notepad and see the same thing?

What happens when it doesn't launch...?

Is this a new wrapper or an upgraded one?

New wrapper made from scratch with 2.5.1.
Same if i try start the explorer which is already inside wrapper, or config utility.
Wrapper bounces in dock.

Spoiler

I just found out if i do "Kill all Wineskin Processes" it launches again.
The top is from before I killed. Strange since I can't see any processes there being killed.
Seems like the wrapper doesn't exit properly, same happens if i just launch iexplorer.exe and close it.
I'm quitting the apps with the apps exit or close, not with apple+Q.

I made a nwn1 port too, same issues with it. That is also a plain 2.5.1 WS with CXG10.1.1.

The same ports do not have this issues on my hack which still runs 10.6.8.

And btw, my old issues with wineskin is 100% gone now, I can port, launch and switch engines like a mad man and not have to restart every 10 minutes on my hack now :)

Well your old problems was to do with something on your system totally screwing up your osascript.  I have 2.5 using 4 different methods to bring to front, trying one at a time and testing to see if ti worked... it will only try the osascript method if the other 3 didn't work.... but the 1st method usually always works and is much better than calling a system command to use osascript... its full cocoa.

As to the problem... That is really making little sense to me.  The kill button used to fix wrapper problems... but I rearranged and fixed everything so those problems didn't occur and it wasn't needed.  Now all the kill button does is run 3 system commands
killall wine
killall wineserver
killall WineskinX11
At that point if something was stuck, the Wineskin process is still running, but it does a shut down of the wrapper after WineskinX11 dies.
I'm guessing something is not shutting down correctly and getting stuck wine or wineserver on there maybe... I'm not sure.  Can you check activity monitor while it is running and then again after and see if there are any stuck wine/wineskin processes?

It seems like it was a coincidence that "kill worked", console says that "No matching processes .." when I do the kill (x3)
I've checked the activity monitor and never any processes that should be the problem.
I posted an top log in previous post, and nothing there suggests that wine is hanging.
Reboot has worked 100%, tested it 10 times now. Luckily a reboot is 12 seconds on the new MBA :P

I thought maybe others had noticed the same, but if this is an issue on my side again I won't bother you too much. I mostly use the MBA for testing purposes for my ports and I do play some older games when I'm away or just wanna play on the couch instead of in my office.

Just for the record, the Icewind Dale port is made on the MBA and the NWN port on the hack, both with 2.5.1 and both with the same issue.

if you manually type those 3 commands.. it says no matching processes each time, but then the port launches ok?

Maybe something system wise is getting stuck... and just issuing the command is somehow unsticking the system... but that wouldn't be anything to do with Wineskin.  I'll listen for others saying this happens, but your the first one I've heard of having this issue.

Yep the only way to get the port working in this situation is to reboot Mac OS X, even all the WINE(SKIN) processes are all killed. Something is stuck. Maybe a Mac OS X bug?

Also, sometimes launching winecfg,DOS shell, regedit through Wineskin.app won't work. The only way to access winecfg, cmd, regedit etc again is to make a custom EXE. A reboot or copying Wineskin.app from another port won't solve the problem.

No, seems that was a one time issue only, I haven't manage to reproduce it.

no way you can tell me how to reproduce this?

I'm wondering if something is getting messed up in your /tmp

I just installed the game with gog.com version and played it, then quit the apps from games own Exit or Exit to windows. Wrapper quits. No processes in activity that are hanging as far as i can tell.
Trying to restart the app, and there's the problem.

Both apps done the same way, one ported on snow leopard and one on lion.
Neither needed additional wine tricks.

Looking at console closer, there are errors from launchd saying spin dump crashed.  I have no idea what would cause that but it could be what is causing X11 to not finish starting up.

Is there any particualr reason why you are no using my port? I can launch, quit and launch it again without issues. The current one is Wineskin 2.4 but I am running an upgraded Wineskin 2.5 version. I will replace it eventually, but the upgrading process is straight forward, if you don't want to wait. The engine used is WS8WineCGX10.1.1
Games I own that still need porting:
Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, Descent 3, Fallout, Space Rangers 2

I think the point here is to find out the bug which is causing ports not able to launch made using Wineskin 2.5.X..

i have a new theory, is it possible some of the processes used by / relied on by Wineskin are hidden or mistakenly not named Wine(skin) as expected, so something is still stuck even though all those Wine(skin) processes are killed in Activity Monitor............

I've had some problems running wineskin 2.4 ports on my machine, a bug that made osascript not launch as it should.
Doh123 and Syao did great job helping me, but they never found out how and why, but just what did did it :D

I do believe doh123 omitted launching x11 with osascript in 2.5, but it do at least work well!

This is still present in latest 2.5.5, but launching with XQuartz does work.

I wonder if this could be a bug related to non-English systems. There is one right now how OSX is handling app IDs that make them not be abl to run two wrappers at once.

I actually have English as preferred language set in International.pane.
I do not thing there is any difference between Mac OS versions anymore, you just choose the preferred system language?

It's still international. Mine is pure English. There are no options for languages at all... no preferred, nothing, it's just English.

well i guess i can add them in there.. never looked, but I only have english in the list.

The issue with non-english systems is known though, so I thought it might be related.  People who are not using English are having Apps handled differently.

I still don't understand why that happens... Not saying it can't happen, but it just doesn't make sense that it does...
Languages are supposed to be just a visual thing, considering how localized OS X versions are made... At home we have 2 Macs with their default language set to Italian (my father's), and I haven't seen a single problem with Wineskin (I ported quite a bit of apps he needs for work).  Same goes for my sister's, which actually has two users, with different international settings (She wants it in Italian, I prefer it in English, and it previously was my laptop, so my user is still there): never had a problem with Wineskin, and she uses a bunch of app ports, too.
Both my Macs are configured as single user, and with English as the preferred language, so those don't count, I guess (I have plenty of other languages installed though.)

In any case, folder structure is the same in each and every Mac.  While you see fancy names in Finder (Desktop -> Scrivania, Documents -> Documenti, Public/Drop Box -> Pubblica/Sola Scrittura, etc), if you open a Terminal (or log in with another user), those folders are still named with their correct English names, so they can't cause troubles.

The only thing that may be different is the Formats (System Prefs -> Language & Text -> Formats), but I have custom settings there (I like to see the extended date in American format, the short date in Japanese/ISO format, clock in 24h format, metric units, english-style decimal/thousands/list separators and Euro as currency - just because I'm used to those settings), and it's never been a problem.  I even use Kotoeri (Japanese) as my main input system 90% of the time, having Caps Lock as Kana/Romaji switcher, and keep a standard U.S. layout, as well as a highly customized version of it, in my Keyboard Layouts status bar menu.  Not even that is a problem for wine (except that it ignores Japanese input and only enters Romaji, but oh well, it can't be helped)

The error I'm referring to, is some non-English users App Bundles are NOT running off the CFBundleID... So even if it's unique, 2 wrappers cannot run at once. Some it's getting "com.wineskin.doh123.X11" as the ID and I have no ideas where that is coming from. Any help?

The error I'm referring to, is some non-English users App Bundles are NOT running off the CFBundleID... So even if it's unique, 2 wrappers cannot run at once. Some it's getting "com.wineskin.doh123.X11" as the ID and I have no ideas where that is coming from. Any help?
Ah, I see.  I found the bugtracker entry now, I had overlooked it.
Is the issue consistenly reproducible on those systems?  Do the bundles used have valid CFBundleIDs? (range of characters accepted should be [a-zA-Z1-9_.] if I remember correctly).

Can you post the output of the following commands while it's bouncing?
ps aux | grep -E -i '(wine|icewind)'
launchctl list

Ive had several people complain about the issue... and one person looked into it more.

looks like everything was set up right to me...

perhaps there is something in the language folders in resources needed...? I was told just having the empty folders with the names is what OSX wants for some reason... to make sure it knows that language is "supported" but should pull things from the English.lproj folder still.

Hmm, why is it running two X11 instances...?

@doh: about the foreign system problems, it looks like things get horribly broken if you use non-ASCII characters in the CFBundleID.... Try this:
(1) Create a new wrapper, give it a non-ASCII name (I called it “テスト.app”).
(2) Set the executable to anything you like (I used /windows/notepad.exe).
(3) Duplicate the wrapper.
(4) Run run the original.  Everything should work.
(5) Run the copy. I got a very awful crash.  Screen went blank, only the mouse pointer was visible, no response to cmd-tab/mission control shortcuts/trackpad gestures (i.e. no way to switch applications). cmd-opt-esc brought up the task kill window, but it was completely empty. The power button brought up the shutdown dialog, but none of the buttons in there actually worked.  Had to hard-shutdown the machine.
(6) On restart, neither the original nor the copy of the app worked anymore. (they appear for a second in the Dock, then disappear.)

Console log at (6) says:
2012-05-10 3:57:41.166 pm com.apple.launchd.peruser.501: ([0x0-0x3f03f].„ÉÜ„Çπ„Éà.wineskin.prefs[1647]) Exited with code: 1
(yes, the CFBundleID shows up in the log as gibberish, while in the Info.plist it's “テスト.Wineskin.prefs”)

Console log at (5) - obtained after rebooting the machine - is:
Spoiler
It looks like something went really wrong with launchd, probably related to the invalid CFBundleIDs...

5) Same crash occurs when double clicking the "test run" in Wineskin 2.5.5. You can wait (about 15 minutes) and the mac will recover.

That's basically the issue, but the guy reporting it on the forums didn't use any weird symbols. He used "Wrapper 1" and "Wrapper 2"

My future plans are to change the wrapper to have a long random string generated automatically for the cfbundleid... And not default off the wrapper name. If someone wants an ID that's more kosher to Apple, they can manually change it.

That's basically the issue, but the guy reporting it on the forums didn't use any weird symbols. He used "Wrapper 1" and "Wrapper 2"

A space counts as a weird symbol I guess...  If you check the Apple docs, it says you can only use alphanumerical chars (0-9, A-Z, a-z), hyphens (-) and periods (.) in bundle IDs....

CFBundleIdentifier

CFBundleIdentifier (String - iOS, Mac OS X) uniquely identifies the bundle. Each distinct application or bundle on the system must have a unique bundle ID. The system uses this string to identify your application in many ways. For example, the preferences system uses this string to identify the application for which a given preference applies; Launch Services uses the bundle identifier to locate an application capable of opening a particular file, using the first application it finds with the given identifier; in iOS, the bundle identifier is used in validating the application’s signature.

The bundle ID string must be a uniform type identifier (UTI) that contains only alphanumeric (A-Z,a-z,0-9), hyphen (-), and period (.) characters. The string should also be in reverse-DNS format. For example, if your company’s domain is Ajax.com and you create an application named Hello, you could assign the string com.Ajax.Hello as your application’s bundle identifier.

Note: Although formatted similarly to a UTI, the character set for a bundle identifier is more restrictive.
