Apparently, in vanilla wine (command line only), we can set locales like this:
LC_MESSAGES=ja_JP.UTF-8 wine japanese.exe
Is there anyway to do this in Wineskin?

yes...

You can enter
export LC_MESSAGES=ja_JP.UTF-8
in the Custom Commands entry.

just remember to add export in there when setting variables like that to make sure it works right.

Wineskin FAQ entry talking about this some

This unfortunately does not work properly for the Symphonic Rain installer.

http://i.imgur.com/wu6hD.png

The installer itself works fine, but there are several other games that break because it cannot properly parse the file names.

"大番長.ain" is how a file appears in the game code, but the game complains it cannot find a file named "ëÂî‘í∑.ain". (If I rename "大番長.ain" to "ëÂî‘í∑.ain", the game then complains that it cannot find "äô?-.ain" or something similar. I've tried virtually everything I can think of.)

I have no clue how to make it handle non ascii characters...  can you rename the EXE or path internally to all ascii characters and see if it works?  Other than that you'd have to tell me how it has to be handled

There's something wrong in the wine documentation.  For some reason (I haven't looked into it), you can set the LANG variable instead of the LC_MESSAGES one, contrarily to what they say here.

I tried it with a japanese game I recently tested with wineskin, and using LANG seemed to do the trick.  I don't know if the engine I used matters, but it was a WS8WineCXG9.2.0

This is with  export LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8
If I set LC_MESSAGES or omit any exports, I get gibberish text like you do.

Oh okay, that makes sense. I'll try that when I get home. Thanks!

Might be a nice feature to have a drop-down in the Wineskin wrapper to easily select a language and push that configuration to Wine...

along with many other options that can be manually put in... yes... go get it done and send me the patch file, and I'll throw it in  :-)

Soon I need to get a list of main options... Languages, Direct3D settings, etc... things that normally are done manually or oddly right now that need a better way, and start working on them...

Sorry, didn't mean to push. It would be a long term thing. In fact, might be better to push the locale based on what the current user is using.. And if I figure out how, I will send a patch, but I am very bad at these things -_-.

I haven't checked on anything other than en_US, but wine docs say the wine locale should try to match the system one, and I've seen some code that's supposed to do so…  Does that work at all?  I wouldn't be too surprised if it's never executed like the code that should ignore the LANG variable and use LC_MESSAGES instead...

Is there any way to change this permanently for the whole bottle?  For example, Winetricks is saying I can't install xmllite because it is "not yet implemented for language".

its not working in custom commands?  hmm... don't recall how I have Winetricks start up, it might be missing running those commands.... I'll have to check on it.

I added in the launch line for Winetricks for the Custom Commands to be ran as well... so it should be fixed when 2.5.6 is out.

Hi all,

I am using Wineskin-2.5.8 with WS9Wine 1.5.11 engine and export LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8
The japanese app looks nicely with no gibberish text. However, when I save the file with the app it give me an error saying データが大きすぎで "Data is too large" I am wondering if this has anything to do with the memory Wineskin allocate for the app? If so, is there a way we can maybe increase memory?

This is the app I was trying to use: Super Mario Bros Titlescreen Editor

thanks!

its just normal user space OS X app, it doesn't do anything special with memory
