... the wrapper has no visible fonts in Steam, all menu, button and other text is gone.
... additionally if I use Test Run the wrapper stops after one second and I get an error that the X DISPLAY is not set correctly (tested more than once: to get it work again I always have to reboot the whole system).

After using my old 1.4.1 engine again everything works without this strange behavior.

Is this a problem with anything other than Steam? I would think a problem with the X DISPLAY would show up in lots of places..

In fact these are two different problems: one with missing fonts and one with the Test Run button in Wineskin.

No idea on the font issue... unless its a bug in Wine.  X server issues shouldn't be a Wine issue though... how are you getting it to happen exactly, as Test Run works for me.  The only bugginess Test Run should have is if your using Override -> fullscreen.

If I am the only one who had this kind of problems with the new Wine version this can be ignored. Maybe it was only some kind of local misconfiguration on my machine.

I have this problem too, and upon researching, many others do as well with any version above the later 1.4's.

I had this problem also…

Problem is caused apparently by some dll you find only on 1.5.x version of wine.

I think it's called dwrite. if you add it with winecfg and immediately disable it, fonts show again on steam.

It's worked for me, though i don't have a clue on what happened.

Maybe someone here can explain it ;)

Perhaps report this to the Wine makers?
