There is mac native version on Steam. (It's powered by Unreal Engine 3) Please add that info like you did wrote GW2 "there is a mac native version now".

Good: CrossOver got own mac driver like Cider. Apple Update can't break it.

Add
Bad: new kind of Cider DRM for Cider 8xxx or 7xxx. (I can't remember it. You can research few of threads.)
Bad: Mac App Store don't put sale like discount. Steam and other store can do.
(I always check stores all times.)

I found out Borderlands 2 is available on Mac App Store BUT it's expensive than Steam. I don't like Mac App Store because they NEVER put sale (discount) on their apps.
(Steam version is $29.99 when its on sale. MAS version is for $44.99.)

really?  If my plans work out, in a couple years that may be bigger 'good'... and in 5 to 10 years if its as big as I want it to be with many employees making fun games... then that might be worth mentioning... but right now, I don't think I'd even put that on my own list as anything major just yet, but I appreciate the mention.

You are not an admin of this forum, you cannot make decisions like that.
If you read the previous revision it says "uofficial title , still to be approved by admin"
I am sill awaiting approval .

But I based the game of the year award of cluthz thread where he asked people what's the best game you played this year

Okay I read the article.  First I really like the idea as a front page article.

Please expand on why things are good / bad - I agree with Hrachya this is more of a list then an article.

ie: I read "Steam Big Picture" - why is that good? I do not even know what you mean by that.

ie: Mac OS X 10.8 - Good? Okay I think yearly updates and I think bad. However people think this as good - so please expand on all you good and bad points. ie why good why bad.

ie: Microsoft failed with Windows 8 causing more users to switch to Macintosh. Do we have a source to back this up?

We just need these things to expand it.

I am fine with poplar ports of the year (ie most downloaded this year etc) but Fry Cry as best port of the year? Based on 9 comments (2 out of 9 saying best game they played and this out 10 000 users in this thread? - http://portingteam.c...played-in-2012/

No. They may not even a played it on a Mac port. Port also does work on most graphic cards. I also believe cluthz thread was best game you played this year. I do not think he meant it had to be made in 2012.

Anyway great idea htminc.

because new SBP Store is better than original Steam Store WebKit (Web-Based. It's really crappy loading). No frozen. However, SBP Startup is faster than original Steam.  Yes, I'm using it.

1 . I selected farcry 3 as game of the year , not port of the year. I chose not to select a port of the year because its hard to rank ports.
2. I do have a source to back up "Microsoft failed with Windows 8 causing more users to switch to Macintosh. Do we have a source to back this up " and i will add in the article .

Thanks for reviewing the article , i will make sure to expand on certain points in the pro/con section .
Maybe after i fix it up , you can post it on the front page :D

Oh and i started a poll on the first post for people to vote on their choice of best game of 2012 and other various topics  .... So vote away .

Although I appreciate your effort I really think this article doesn't speak for the majority of the users on this forum.

If you would focus a bit more around the ports that was popular I'm sure that it could be front page material,
but making a list with your personal pros and cons and post it on the front page is not something I want.

I would love people voicing their opinion on the front page, I've done that myself a few times already, but that requires the article to clearly state that it's your opinion, you need to back it up with some kind of facts and you need to be fair and critical with both the stuff you like and the stuff you don't.

If you read thru my old "native vs ports" article, you can see that I clearly voice my opinion, but i do also put the facts on the table too.

Also FarCry 3 was one of the last released games in 2013, thus it still got a lot of attention. I've sunken about 5-6 hours into it now, and so far i can say the game is fun, but it has many very huge flaws. Also I don't know why we should vote for a game of the year? We're not reviewing games here, also promoting a game that is not playable as a port is also against our best intention.

So what you are saying is that we get rid of the list of good and bad list and just focus on popular ports .

Not really, but focus on stuff that most of us can agree about like f.ex:

Pros:
-Many new official mac releases, games like Borderlands 2 was released as a native port just a few weeks after the official release!
-More digital distribution services now sells mac games, like www.gog.com
-WIne is getting better and better DX9 support

...

Cons:
-Not all the official mac ports did works as well as advertised, Black Ops was unplayable on just about any NVidia machine.
-Latest OS updates broke all our ports, well fix't now, but we held our breath for a second there!
-More games becomes unportable because the change to more dx10 and dx 11 games.
...

I'd focus on few things, most of us doesn't care about apple stocks, it does not affect us. To be honest there have never been slower development and fewer mac models than now.

Also explain why and why not :)

honestly, we should have someone who has English as their first language (or is at least fluent) do it. Sorry hmtinc, but it's the truth.
I guess I could edit it, but it'd take way too much time.

honestly, we should have someone who has English as their first language (or is at least fluent) do it. Sorry hmtinc, but it's the truth.
I guess I could edit it, but it'd take way too much time.
English is my first language , its just that i am terrible at grammar and spelling .
I posted this article because i thought it be interesting to have a year in review article on the front page . Nobody suggested a year in review , so i posted mine along with my article .
If anybody wants to write their own article on this topic then go ahead , this thread was just a mere suggestion and a way to get people thinking about it

I don't get all the stink... but I do get human nature.  Anything anyone writes that has an opinions in it will start fights since everyone has different opinions.

Bad: New version OS X will break X11 driver for Wine software in future.

If you are referring to the bug that caused X11 to have to updated in order to work with Mt. Lion that's just a part of the larger picture of changes they made that broke certain things in apps that had to be updated much like any other OS update. Similar things happened with the Bluetooth stack which caused apps like Dolphin to "break" so that when you hook up your Wii remote dolphin would crash until they updated it. Candybar was broken and was updated to customize most icons except for some app store icons and the dock is no longer customizable beyond the indicators and separator. More examples could probably be brought up but there's a wide variety of software I don't use and sometimes even the ones I do use I use so infrequently and get patched so quickly as to not be noticeable That's just a fact of life with OS updates sometimes.

If you are referring to Apple not bundling X11, well they did the same thing to Java too. Instead of maintaining their own they delegated the job to people who are better at doing it. Sometimes others can do a better job and it's probably best to let them do it.

It's probably better for Wine to move away from using third party windowing libraries like X11 though. I would go out on a limb and say it was never meant to port games from Windows to Mac anyway. Windows does not use X11 for anything and simply put (X11) was really made to provide a network transparent GUI for Unix based systems. The only reason why Wine used it in the first place was because it was easier. Same with other applications like The GIMP but it too has moved away from X11 and it has been a long time coming.

Voting for a game of the year is pointless, hardly anyone has played all of those games. Also, there is only one non-AAA game in the list, what about games like FTL: Faster Than Light or Eador: Genesis, which I both really liked? And if add those two, why not add pretty much any game to the list? Your intention is good, but there is no way for this not to turn into just a popularity contest. Same thing with port of the year, who has tried out all the ports? The only thing we can do would be something like best selling games of 2012 or most downloaded port in 2012.

I would also take the following parts out of the list:

Quote

Steam Big Picture <-- doesn't really have anything to do with porting or Mac
Black Mesa Source is finished and released <-- same
Elder scrolls online announced <-- same
Apple Upgrades the iMac's , Macbook pro's , & Mac book air's <-- too general, it's just another yearly update (also, don't use the apostrophe ' for plural, the apostrophe indicates posession)
Mac Book Retina Arrives on Store Selves <-- not sure, this could be left in because it's special enough
Doh123 founded UrgeSoftware <-- like doh said, currently it's just a name
Apple Stock rises 48% <-- again, not sure
World Didn't end <-- doesn't have anything to do with porting, but leave it in anyway because it's funny
Microsoft  failed again with Win8 and causing more pc users to look toward making the move to OSX or linux <-- take it out unless you have hard data to back up this claim. Always back claims up, otherwise it's just sensationalist gossip

Spammers <-- happens all the time
Fake Ports <-- same
Diablo 3 Server Errors <-- again, this doesn't have anything to do with us
Future versions of Mac osx may break x11 <-- you need to back up this claim
Increased DRM in Games <-- leave it only if DRM is making porting harder than it is. I don't know since I don't buy games with DRM
Apple Drops "Mac" from "Mac OSX" <-- again, this has nothing to do with porting, nor is it a bad or good thing. it's like how people got outraged when Nintendo change their logo from red to grey (even though it's actually the old logo from the NES age)
The Mac pro Has yet to be updated <-- again, it has nothing to do with porting
Apples Stock Drops 28 % <-- same
Mac app store did not hold a sale <-- this isn't really bad either, it's the individual publishers and developers who hold sales.
When you write a summary you always need to decide on the scope of it, what it is supposed to cover and what it isn't. Much of what you included goes outside our scope and if you want to increase the scope then your coverage is too thin and too selective. I understand the desire to put in as much as possible, especially if it is something that interests you, but limiting your scope leads to a more streamlined article and better readability. Users come to this site specifically for porting, chances are they are already getting their general gaming information elsewhere. It has been said many times: "keep it simple".
Games I own that still need porting:
Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, Descent 3, Fallout, Space Rangers 2
